München Doorway

I became fascinated with the old and unique doorways in the city of München (Munich) Bavaria. Many of the doorways of churches and public buildings seemed to be unique and very artistic. Of course some, like this one are quite ancient and maybe that was one of the sources of my fascination. This is a door exiting the courtyard of München Town Hall.

Rathaus-Glockenspiel Detail

Last year i published a post on the famous Glockenspiel in München Bavaria. Although it was a nice scenic picture of Town Hall where the Rathaus-Glockenspiel is located it occurred to me that you really couldn’t see the detail of this famous landmark. I recently found this closeup which provides a much better view of what the Rathaus-Glockenspiel is all about and why each day hundreds gather to see and hear the performance.

Magnificent Ceiling

We wandered in to a small dark Church in Munich. It was very dark, small and not real impressive. We went through the small Church museum and the place was also small and relatively unimpressive. Then we went upstairs and discovered another another hall of worship and wow, it was flooded with light, stain glass windows and one of the most beautiful ceilings I have ever seen.

München Street View

The first time we were in München was only for two days and one of those days was spent at Neuschwanstein Castle and the rest of the time it rained. We saw little of the city. This time we were there for five days and took the trams and subways all over the city. It is really a wonderful city. It is filled with history, wonderful museums and sites, great food and the maybe best beer in the world.

We spent some times in neighborhoods outside the tourist center. We visited some coffee shops, food markets and even a laundry mat. I think of it as a workingman’s city but that said it had great public building, parks and musuems and even a palace or two.

A typical street outside of the main tourist center.

The Rathaus-Glockenspiel München

The Rathaus-Glockenspiel of München (Munich) was part of the reconstruction on München Town hall in 1908. Every day at 11 A.M. it chimes and the clockworks move and display stories from the 16th century to entertain visitors. The upper stories of town hall consists of 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures. The top half of the Glockenspiel tells the story of the marriage of the local Duke Wilhelm V who was the founder of the world famous Hofbräuhaus.

Speed Dreams

My wife and I both took too many images inside the BMW Museum in München. We talked later how compelling it was. The museum was so beautiful and the displays so complete the photography was almost a compulsion. In most museums you can’t take photos and in most who would want to. I don’t need a picture of a painting hanging on a wall and the glare off the frame thank you very much.

It should have been the same here, I mean how many images of engines do you need? Yet the displays were perfect and you could feel the speed. You could tell by watching the people. We would pause, stare at a car or motorcycle. You could see the fantasy play over our eyes, we were IN the car, feeling the speed and oh yes it was good.
