Mountain Textures

<a href="http://https://www.blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/nevada/red-rock-canyon”>Red Rock Canyon is a National Conservation Area and managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

The texture of the different rocks and the structure of the mountains make this a truly interesting wild west terrain. I wonder if the shallow cave has been used for shelter for man or beast.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

<a href="http://https://www.blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/nevada/red-rock-canyon”>Red Rock Canyon is a National Conservation Area and managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It is not a National Park so like Bears Ears National Monument to the east it can easily be unprotected by arrogant and greedy politicians.

However In this snapshot of time it is still beautiful and pristine. It looks like the real west at every turn. There is a 14 mile scenic drive and many hikes and rock climbing opportunities.

Purple Haze

I have visited Las Vegas many times but usually on business and never made it very far from the strip. This time we finally made it to Red Rocks National Conservation Area.

Considering the greed and corruption of our current government I suggest you go quickly before they start, fracking, digging or otherwise destroy this beautiful wilderness. It is truly a magnificent area for climbing or hiking and if your not in the mood the 14 mile scenic drive will provide an easier way to explore the beauty of the area. This purple bush caught my eye. A splash of color in the wilderness.

Windows on Market Square

A few weeks ago I published The Birdman of Pittsburgh which was taken in the 1970″s. The picture received a few comments and people asked me where that picture was taken in relationship to the current Market Square.

I am not sure but think I was probably standing in what is now part of PPG Place. I believe I was standing off 4th Avenue near Stanwix. The windows and reflections from PPG Place are truly amazing.

Solace at The Phipps

Another week and spring is three weeks old with freezing temperatures and snow once again on the way. There is only one place in Pittsburgh you can really see Spring today and that is at the Phipps Conservatory Spring Flower Show.

This plant has always amazed me because of its texture and the way it refracts light waves. At certain times of day it is almost as if you can see into the leaf structure. So if like me you find the current Spring weather depressing head over to the Phipps to take shelter from the storm.

Corned Beef Hash–Pittsburgh Style

When I was a kid, corned beef hash came from a can. It was all I knew so it was ok but when I became an adult it was not. Then I would order corned beef hash at diners. Sometimes it was great and some times it was awful and usually it was greasy.

Over the years I found a couple of breakfast places that made it well. In Pittsburgh acceptable corned beef hash can be found at Pamela’s (tell them well done.) The Square Cafe is very good and very expensive. The best we have found is Kelly O’s in the Strip District

Then one day my wife finally tried it and liked it and we began to make it ourselves. We use kosher extra lean corn beef, red potatoes and onions. Its never greasy and kind of pretty to look at too.

Rain Rain Go AWAY!

I look forward to this time of year. It is my birthday month and usually the weather has broken and the flowers are rising. However here in Pittsburgh it refuses to stop raining. I don’t know who is taking this worse me or my dog.

I look outside and see all the daffodils beaten into submission by the rain. I really shouldn’t complain, some people have had their houses slide way. I will take solace by looking at old images of flowers until the weather breaks…sigh.
