Art Deco Masterpiece

My daughter asked me to find a suitable image for a site she is working on involving the city of Chicago. I sent her some images and once again was struck with the beauty of this building which is symbolic of the Second City.

When ground was broken for the Wrigley Building in 1920, there were no major office buildings north of the Chicago River. The Michigan Avenue Bridge was still under construction. Today this magnificent architectural structure is a symbol of the great city of Chicago and a National Landmark. It is a true art deco masterpiece and rivals the Empire State Building in New York as a symbol of that style.

Pittsburgh Signs–Beckert Seed Company

Continuing with the Pittsburgh Signs and Murals project, I give you the remnants of the Bekhert Seed and Bulb Company formerly on Liberty Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. This faded sign is all that is left and can be seen from Market Square.

Many major cities had seed and bulb companies in the early 1900’s. Centralization and mass production in places like Holland Michigan made it difficult for small operations to survive.

Pittsburgh Murals–The Strip District

I promised myself that this year I was going to photograph the signs and murals around Pittsburgh. Some are faded reminders of old businesses but some are distinct identification of Pittsburgh neighborhoods.

This one from The Strip District is one of the best and most famous.

Scenic Views Candidate #2–View From The Speaker’s Gallery

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. Right now I am reviewing images that are scenic in nature. This is Washington D.C. as seen from The Speaker’s Balcony of the U.S. Capitol

Candidate #2--The Speaker's Balcony

Capitol Door

To me it seemed like everything in The US Capitol was special and had some unique thought behind it. Everywhere there is art. Even the tunnels leading from the office buildings to the Capitol have art from high school seniors across America. There are huge painting and many sculptures. Even some of the doors are artistic displays like this one outside the Speaker’s Balcony.

I can think of many political things to say today but in the spirit of this blog I will say none. Instead here is a lovely picture of a symbol of freedom. That’s it. Carry on.

Motif #1

This is the harbor at Rockport Massachusetts. I took this photo early in my career on a frigid November day while my family waited in a restaurant on the pier where later I had some fantastic clam chowder. Years later I discovered this scene is commonly called Motif #1 because it is one of the most photographed and painted scenes in the world. Art teachers assign this to teach students about painting light, color and vistas. Who knew?

Patterns

This weeks theme will be patterns. Photographers, including myself, are fascinated with patterns. I think that is because, unlike painters, we deal with physically moving our position and the position of our tools (tripod, lens, etc.)to compose an image. Of course there are patterns in everything, but this weeks images will focus on images that I like primarily because of their repetitive patterns. This one was taken along the Chicago river on the Architectural tour. You can see other images and buy prints of this one at my commercial gallery.

Paris Summer Night

On a clear summer night there are few cities as beautiful as Paris. Every corner, old building and tree have a story to tell. Because of the geographical location it stays light longer making natural light images like easier to photograph. See more images from Paris and buy Prints at my commercial gallery.
