Glass Trumpet at Carnegie Museum

As I stood in front of this piece of art I couldn’t help but think of Miles Davis and Randy Brecker. I never met Miles Davis but I did have the good fortune to be stuck on an airport Super Shuttle in New Orleans with the Brecker Brothers.By the end of the 90 minute ride we were showing each other pictures of our kids and swapping horror stories about life on the road. Great guys to be stuck in a van with. I have seen Brecker perform a few times, sorry I never got to see Miles.

Self Portrait at Carneige Museum

I seem to like self portraits were you can’t see my face like the one I use for my avatar where the camera is my face. Last year I posted a new one from Las Vegas.

Last week I took this one at Carnegie Exhibition in Pittsburgh. You can see my face a little but I like how slim it makes me look. Takes me back 40 years.

Alex Da Corte’s Neon Ghost House

One of the most amazing parts of the 57th Carnegie International Exhibition is The Neon Ghost House developed by Alex Da Cortes. The Neon house is amazing enough but inside is a small screening room. Running for over three hours there are 57 videos an homage not only to the anniversary but also to Pittsburgh’s famous 57 varieties.

Some of the videos are short and some longer and the artist performs in all of them. We saw him play Fred Rodgers and a strange version of Bugs Bunny singing Moon River.

The 57th Carnegie International Exhibition

Unfortunately we did not make it to the museum to see the 57th Carnegie International Exhibit until yesterday. It really needs to be seen more than once.

The use of video and music in this exhibition is truly amazing. There is one 8 minute video in which each scene was painted by hand. And another that has videos of varying lengths for over three hours. Just a few days left so go if you are able it will not be disappointing. It’s at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland.

Coming Soon to a Pittsburgh Garden Near You

In some parts of the United States you can’t grow daffodils outside. Bulbs require a period of cold and in warm climates they force them to bloom inside and they can be purchased as annuals. In the northeast though, they begin to poke their heads out of the grown and as Spring arrives pride fresh color reminding us of the circle of life.

I love the change of seasons and each Spring I find fresh hope by watch our city change from the drop of winter to the bright colors of Spring.

Ghosts of Köln

Years ago I learned the basics of blur motion photography. Placing the camera on a tripod and using a slow shutter speed allows you to create blurred motion on a still background. If you pan with the movement you will create another type of blur effect like this one entitled Running Deer. I have often thought of this process as creating ghosts.

While relaxing in Köln on the waterfront I decided to try to make some “ghosts” using a monopod. A lot of my attempts didn’t work. A monopod is not as good as a tripod but I still managed to capture a couple of ghosts.

The Girl in The Blue Dress

I published the full color version of this image in 2008 entitled Graffiti and The Girl. In looking back I realized that the image suffered from too much color and too much clutter.

I decided to edit the vision and after cropping to remove some of the clutter, I did some masking and selective color. I think the result is stunning.

Köln Fall Foliage

This autumn we will be returning to Europe. Our last visit was during the autumn of 2016. This time we will be in Spain and Italy and I am sure we will not see any colorful fall foliage there. I remembered being disappointed in seeing little dramatic foliage during our last trip through Germany and Austria.

Looking through the files I think I was mistaken. These were taken in Köln (Cologne) Germany during that trip.

Hamming it Up

You can buy excellent prosciutto aka Parma Ham in the USA. Every good Italian food store and deli will offer a variety. They are always in delicatessen cases. Most USA Italian restaurants offer a variety of dishes offering this delicacy.

The restaurants that we visited in Italy didn’t hide it away. It was almost presented like a lead actor in a play. If a dish require Parma Ham a waiter or chef would go to the center of the room where this beauty was displayed and with a very sharp knife cut what they needed. Food and entertainment.
