The Chicago Botanic Garden

We recently visited the Chicago Botanic Garden. A fantastic outing and too big for one day. You could spend most of the day looking at the model railroads alone. The trail to see the entire garden is over two miles and it does not include all the side excursions you can take. Next time we visit we will make sure to get to the Japanese Garden.

This Years Crop

When our new neighbors put in a fence I wondered how it would change our backyard. It only improved it by giving us a little more privacy I thought. Then I realized the real advantage. The deer that would every year travel up from Frick Park to eat our lilies would no longer have access to our back garden.

For the last two years we have had amazing blooms. This year they not only survived the deer but also a terrible storm that brought down trees but not our five feet tall lilie

Better Than Ever

Our perennial garden in Regent Square gets better every year. Now that we have figured out how discourage the wandering deer from Frick Park, each year our perennials grow larger and are mre numerous. Here are a couple of this years day lilies.

Missing the Phipps Conservatory

I am reading a novel by Stewart O’Nan entitled Emily Alone. The author is from Pittsburgh and his descriptions of our city are really accurate. The chapter I am reading today is about The Phipps Conservatory and he made me realize how much I miss going there. We are members and normally we visit three or four times a year. Not his year though, hopefully we will be able to go next year.

Missing the Phipps

I miss my friends and relatives but also just miss people in general. Each season we would make a visit to the Phipps Conservatory, The Aviary and Pittsburgh Museums. As members you begin to recognize the staff members. I hope they are all OK. Here are some pictures from previous visits to the Phipps Conservatory of Pittsburgh.

Summer Sunday at Jardin du Luxembourg

I miss traveling so I have been been looking through old files for summertime images. This was taken in Paris at the Jardin du Luxembourg in 2009. Every time I visit Paris we go to this garden. Paris is like any other major city, things slow down on Sunday. In the summer people have a lot of Parks to choose from in Paris. Parc Monceau,Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Palais Royal are some of the better known spots. However, my favorite is the Jardin du Luxembourg adjacent to Luxembourg Palace which is the center of the French Government. It is very large with many different spaces and you can see lovers kissing, joggers jogging and some of the most beautiful gardens in the world.

A Moment of Hope #2

We are living in some scary times right now. I am old and have lived through others but this one is somehow different and maybe more frightening. So until it is over each day I plan to post an image that provides calmness and a moment of zen. We all need a lot of moments like these right now.

This is a pond in the spring. Pond are full of hope and new life in the spring. You can hear the peepers and see the baby turtles on their banks. Sitting and gazing into a pond and listening to the sounds provide and uplift to the human spirit.

Here is a daffodil from our Pittsburgh garden. You have to have hope to plant a garden.

A Lily Found

I haven’t been able to shoot much this summer being hobbled by a bad back. I have been spending my time instead editing and reimagining old images. I shot this lily years ago at our house in the Pocono Mountains. I remember thinking when I took it that I was treating this like a portrait with a key light. The shadows on the leaves of the stamen create a certain drama to the image.
