Color Guard

I published the full color version of this picture earlier this week in Changing of The Guard. I thought the guard got lost in the image so I did a little bit of editing to make him stand out.

Saint Vitus Cathedral Prague

Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague Czech Republic is a very important Cathedral in Roman Catholicism. It is located within the Prague Castle Complex which is a collection of ancient buildings dating back to the tenth century. At the time Prague was the seat of The Holy Roman Empire.

It is a be example of Romanesque architecture with awe inspiring stained glass and statues inside and outside the Cathedral.

Changing of The Guard

I am not a big fan of the military and soliders. I appreciate the sacrifices they make but I am not very knowledgable or interested in military things. That said I love the pomp and circumstance of the changing of the guard. I have seen it at the Tomb of The Unknown Solider and more recently at Prague Castle.

Prague Castle is the current seat of government for the Czech Republic and has been the seat of emperors and kings dating back to 9th century. The ceremony is therefore guarded by active soliders in addition to the ceremonial guard.

Associated Artists of Pittsburgh Poll

In the 1970s I was a member of The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. It is the oldest, continuously-exhibiting, visual arts organization in the country. Founded in 1910, AAP has spent over 100 years as a driving force in Pittsburgh’s dynamic cultural life.

I had been thinking about rejoining and when I called them they gave me a couple of choices. I could pay my back dues since I left (over $3000) or join again through the new member screening process. Guess which I chose. I am allowed to submit up to 5 pieces of work to the screening. I am having trouble picking the fifth piece so I am asking for your help in deciding.

Keep in mind my artists statement when choosing and kindly answer my poll. Thanks for your help!

My artistic vision however has always been to capture the perfect moment. Henri Cartier-Bresson states there is a decisive moment for each image. This is true for every image. Even a sunrise has that perfect moment. However in my opinion it is especially true for photojournalism. The moment before lips touch, right before the dog catches the Frisbee and right before the bat strikes the ball. The focus of my artistic photography is to catch a moment that would make Henri Cartier-Bresson nod in appreciation.

Strolling The Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks of Prague. We were in Prague for five days and The Charles Bridge was always crowded. I am sure early in the morning it is not as crowded and less crowded on week days. However it is like the Ponte Vecchio of Praha (Prague) and if you were there you wouldn’t miss it. It is a pedestrian bridge and connects the old city with the Prague Castle area.

When returning from Prague I posted a scenic view of the bridge from the Castle. However strolling along the bridge is a unique experience. There are 30 statues mounted to the balustrade of Charles Bridge in Prague. They form two rows, one on each side. It is crowded with people musicians and vendors.

A Brace of Pigeons at The National Aviary

The National Aviary always has surprise for me. Every time we go we try to spend time talking to the docents and staff who are full of interesting information.

Pigeons to me are the squat grey birds you see eating trash in ever city in The United Sates. Yet the aviary has many varieties of pigeons. Last week I posted an image of a nesting blue pigeon. This pair is maybe not quite as stunning but beautiful birds in their own right.

Polly Has a Friend at The National Aviary

Every time I go to the The National Aviary I take pictures of the large blue parrot who I affectionately call Polly. She has always been a solo act and too beautiful not to photograph. However this time she had a friend.

There are more birds in the private part of the Aviary than there are on display. I found that out this visit, unfortunately you can’t visit the other habitats. This explains though why you might see different birds each time you visit. Rotating them helps keep the animals from stressing out.

Stunning Pigeon at The National Aviary

The National Aviary is the largest bird zoo in America and a true Pittsburgh treasure. Fun to visit in the winter when it is cold outside and you can stroll through tropical wetlands.

Believe it or not, this beauty is actually a pigeon. Not your average street eagle for sure and caught here sitting on her nest in newly remodeled The Tropical Rainforest habitat at the aviry.

Croton at the Phipps Conservatory

Nothing is better when its freezing outside than visiting The Phipps Conservatory Orchid Show. The orchid room is full of blooming orchids and so warm and moist you won’t want to leave.

I assume that everything in The Orchid Room is an orchid but that is not so. Fortunately I always visit with my wife who is somewhat of an expert. There are many succulents and tropical plants like this beautiful croton.
