Moments and Souls Outtake #6

Along with Dale Schmitt of Pittsburgh, I am pleased to announce our photo exposition at The Percolate Art Space in Pittsburgh. The exhibition runs from November 8,2017 until December 2,2017.

Richard Burke and Dale Schmitt have over 80 years of combined photographic experience. They are both eclectic photographers with broad portfolios of commercial and artistic work. They photograph people but approach that part of their portfolio in completely different ways. Richard is all about capturing the decisive moment and Dale is a creator of portraits that capture the souls of his subjects.

In order to whet your appetite we will be posting some outtakes. These are images that did not make the final cut for the exhibition but may be part of a book based on the show concept. This one was photographed in Chicago 2010 at a White Sox Game on Father’s Day.

Mother and Son

Death in The Desert

The saguaro cactus species is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and the Mexican State of Sonora. It can grow to be over 40 feet and can live up to 150 years. They grow their first “arm” at 50 years of age

In 1994, Saguaro National Park, near Tucson, Arizona you can see thousands of these. Every now an then you will see a dead one. Wind, insects, lightning and old age are the natural enemy of the desert monolith. This one looks like it was struck by lightning and suffered a tragic death.

A Passing Moment

Mums The Word

Its the time of the year that you see chrysanthemums popping up all over gardens in the Northeast. In some zones, all mums are hardy perennials. In Pittsburgh you will see two types and hardy ones will be marked as winter hardy in nurseries.

With global warming though our winters are becoming milder and even non hardy mums may winter over. So we will leave ours in the ground until spring and see which ones survive. The colors are very vibrant for weeks.

Independence Day

Fort Pitt

The Fort Pitt Museum is at the site of the old Fort Pitt Blockhouse at the confluence of the Ohio River. The museum is interesting and the docents dress in clothing from the era. Only the blockhouse remains but the size of the original fort was is quite large and outlined by a concrete walking path.

Some of the original artillery is still functional. Periodically they fire the big canon and the presentation is fun and LOUD!

Street Kiss

Gerbera Daisy

We always considered Gerbera daisies to be annuals. However the U.S. Department of Agriculture says the plant is hardy in zones 8 to 11. Although Pittsburgh is a Zone 6 we have had very mild winters due to global warning and our daisies now seem to be perennials. I hope it is another mild winter so I can see this flower again next summer.

High Tide on the Bay of Fundy

Multicolored Dahlias

Dahlias have always been one of my favorite summer flowers. They are perennial plants native to Mexico and related to sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia. I always thought they were only one color but these are a beautiful multicolored variety.
