The Protea Farm

While in Maui a friend of ours took us to a Protea Farm. Protea is an ancient angiosperm found in fossils back as far as 80 million years. They only grow naturally in Africa, Australia and South America, It is believed they grew in South America and Australia before the continents split from Africa. They can be cultivated and now grow naturally in Hawaii which is the only place in the United States they can be found outside of a greenhouse.

Miss Iris is Ready for Her Close Up!

Spring is a rolling cascade of blooms in Pittsburgh. Crocus give way to daffodils and then tulips and now the queen of early spring. The Bearded Iris is truly a majestic bloom with a deep rich color.

Bleeding Heart First Bloom

One of my favorite perennials in our garden is the bleeding heart. It has the most delicate blooms. Each year the plant gets bigger and it will bloom for weeks.Soon the plant will get bushy and covered in blooms and our garden will be full of delicate hearts.

Remembering Tulips in Regent Square

One of my favorite spring flowers is the Rembrandt Tulip. Unfortunately this one is a couple years old. We have had to stop growing tulips because the deer from Frick Park consider them to be part of a special buffet. The farther away you get from the park the more chance you have of your tulips surviving. We are too close for tulips but that is a blessing I happily accept.

A Special Daffodil from Our Regent Square Garden

I had never noticed a daffodil that looked like this. It looks more like a dahlia to me. I had seen a couple walking my dog through Regent Square and then low and behold a couple showed up in our garden. My wonderful wife again surprising me with what she plants.

Inside Out In Regent Square

Today we had one of the largest snowfalls we have had in years. Over nine inches. The visual difference between the inside of our house and the outside is pretty extreme.

Today’s Lily from our Regent Square Garden

We planted these lilies three years ago and every year the deer would come right before they bloomed and eat the bulbs. Our neighbor built a new fence making it hard for the deer to get to the lilies and finally we get to see these spectacular flowers.

Why I Hate Deer

When we moved to the Pocono Mountains we oohed and awed over the deer. Our real estate agent said you will learn to hate them. I thought I never could hate such a pretty animal. We lived backed up to the woods on a fenced acre of land and the fence and our border collie kept the deer and bear away. Still they were a nuisance and we actually had to have a deer cull every year to control the population. It wasn’t until we moved to Regent Square that I began to hate them.

Yesterday I shared an image an image of a large tiger lily. Today they are all gone as are the red ones. They come like stealth invaders at night, eat our flowers and crap on our lawn. They are bad neighbors and wish they would stay in the park. There is plenty of food in the park. In the Poconos I would shoot at them with a pellet gun to scare them off but I can’t do that here. Sure they are pretty but so are our flowers which we rarely get to see due to their insatiable appetites. I hate deer.
