Run Around the Square–Women’s Winner

For our second full year in Pittsburgh we decided to become more involved in the community and served on the Board of Directors for Run Around The Square. We met a lot of new people and for the first time we helped the race to arrange for a professional race photographer.

After watching the winner cross the finish line, I wondered if they would put up a finish line tape for the first woman to cross the finish line. To this date a woman has never bested a man in marathon or long distance races although each year the gap narrows. As I watched I saw the race crew get ready and watched as he carefully chose the right moment to dart across the course to set the tape for the first woman to finish and provide for her the same moment that the male finisher experienced. The sequence below tells the story.

Run Around the Square Winner

For our second full year in Pittsburgh we decided to become more involved in the community and served on the Board of Directors for Run Around The Square. We met a lot of new people and for the first time we helped the race to arrange for a professional race photographer.

There are really two races. The first is a fun run and people walk with their small children and pets. The second is a timed 5K race and it all ends with a giant after party in Frick Park. It is a wonderful community event that raises money for Regent Square. It is the only race I know of that provides professional musicians at the water stops and free beer and hot dogs from D’s Six Pack and Dogz (The best hot dogs in the city!) Not only that but most of the Race is through our neighborhood’s beautiful Frick Park.

I was supposed to walk in the race with my wife, but I didn’t. I sprained my knee and couldn’t answer the bell so I hung out with the race photographers at the finish line.. You can see and purchase thousands of pictures from the race by clicking here.

Scenic Views Candidate #4—Summer Moon

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. Right now I am reviewing images that are scenicor from nature. This is a blend of two images taken in the pocono mountains and merged in Photoshop.

Peggy’s Cove N.S. 1981

In 1981 we traveled to Nova Scotia. Those were the days of film photography and although I did some monochrome, mostly I shot 35mm color transparency film. I don’t have too many of the slides left. I either lost or had two trays of slides stolen some time in the 1980’s. I have shared some of the survivors; High Tide in Bay Of Fundy and Peggy’s Cove. This is one of the monochrome images from that trip.

Rider Reimagined

I took this picture years ago. It is motion pan of a fashioned model that I worked with. After we did the fashion shots we went to her barn where she kept this beautiful horse and she went on a trail ride. I only had one chance to capture the motion pan. I set up in a meadow with my camera on a tripod and when I was ready I waved at her and she began her ride, I had always like this shot so I recently edited the image using NIK tools and used a vignette which may or may not have improved it. Your opinion?

Pitching Coach

One of the big differences between MLB Spring Training and the actual season is getting to watch the coaches work. During the season you only seem to see the pitching coach when he comes to the mound to stall the game while a reliever warms up in the bullpen. However during the spring training they have much less restraint.

At McKechnie Field in Bradenton Florida there is a small bleacher next to the dugout and all the coaches sit on the bench during the game and between innings they scramble to deliver their wisdom. This is an image of Pittsburgh Pirates Pitching Coach David Jauss talking to a fielder as he left the field of play between innings. Usually pitching coaches only talk to pitchers but in spring training there are a lot of coaches and they work with all the players.
