My Virtual Vacation Day 10—München Germany

We had hoped in retirement to travel the world. So far we have done a pretty good job with trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and The Czech Republic. However the pandemic has stopped all of that for a while. So while waiting for Africa, Alaska and Scandinavia, our current travel is going to have to be virtual. Today’s stop is München (Munich)in the Bavarian part of Germany.

Munich was much different than anticipated. I expected a large industrial city and although it is that it is also beautiful and filled with history. Like most parts of Germany prior to the unification of the German state, Munich was a city state and Capitol of Bavaria. In the Altstadt (Old Town), the central Marienplatz square contains landmarks such as Neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus (town hall), with a popular glockenspiel show that chimes and reenacts stories from the 16th century.

My Virtual Vacation Day 5—Hohenschwangau Bavaria

We had hoped in retirement to travel the world. So far we have done a pretty good job with trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and The Czech Republic. However the pandemic has stopped all of that for a while. So while waiting for Africa, Alaska and Scandinavia, our current travel is going to have to be virtual. Today’s stop is Hohenschwangau Bavaria. It is a small German village near the Austrian border, It is most famous as the home of Neuschwanstein Castle. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and in honour of Richard Wagner. The castle was used by Disney as a model for their theme parks.

Just a Couple of Ducks

There is nothing really special about this image. Just a couple of ducks on a pond. OK, well the pond is in Bavaria at Schloss Nymphenburg and that makes it special to me. I am happy that my journey through life took me there on an autumn day to meet these beautiful ducks.

Other than that, nothing special.

Doorways of München #2

Last month I published a series of images entitled Doorways of Prague . Traveling through Europe I have always been fascinated with the architecture. Sometimes it is difficult to capture a whole structure in an image but you can always capture the entire doorway. On my last trip I realized how the doorway is in some way a synopsis of the whole structure.

So here is a new series The Doorways of München (Munich). I am sorry I am not disciplined enough to take notes of the location of each doorway.

Schloss Nymphenburg

People say this palace is reminiscent of Versailles. Its actually the other way around. Schloss Nymphenburg was built in 1664 about 20 years before Versailles. It was the summer residence to the birth of the long-awaited heir to the throne, Max Emanuel, who was born in 1662 to the Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife.

You can take the subway from Munich directly to the castle. The building is magnificent and although the gardens are not as large as Versailles they are beautiful and well managed.

The Spitting Fountain of Munich

I like images that are not always what they first appear to be. It looks as if this family is upset because the fountain was spitting at them. Of course that is not the case. I am sure it is also not called The Spitting Fountain of Munich

Forty-Five… European Street Music

Recently we took a four week trip through Europe. We started in Amsterdam and finished in Prague. I made a vow to myself that I would take video of every street musician we saw. Some were great, some not so great but all provided an interesting taste of the countries we traveled through. What I like as much as the music is the action in the streets around the performers. Watch until the end and take a look at the “gold statues” behind the performers.

Scenic Views Candidate #1—Schloss Schwangau

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. Right now I am focusing on images that are scenic in nature. This is Schloss Schwangau located in the Bavarian town of Schwangau as seen from the balcony of Neuschwanstein.

Schwangau View of Neuschwanstein Castle

I have been editing old european images in preparation for my next visit to Europe in October. I have published a number of shots of Neuschwanstein but only the front, back and interiors of the castle and views from the castle. This is the side of the castle as seen from the village. It is undoubtedly this view that caught the imagination of Disney. This is the right side of the castle as seen from the main street in Schwangau.
