Run Around The Square

In just one more week our neighborhood will be transformed once again. Each year near the end of August Pittsburgh has one of its best 5k races. There are a number of things that make Run around The Square</em> different. The race goes through the cobblestone streets of Pittsburgh’s Regent Square Neighborhood and then through Frick Park ending in Fern Hollow in the midst of the park.Along the way there are water breaks, cmapagne breaks and live musical performers to entertain the racers.

At the end of the race Regent Square’s famous Hot Dog Shop serves up free hot dogs and beer to the crowd in the park and other local business also offer water, snacks and free merchandise to entrants.

A Monaco Moment

It was pretty crowded when we visited Monaco and saw the Changing of The Guard at noon. However, standing alone and striking a pose she presented a striking vision.

My Virtual Vacation Day 15—Monaco

We had hoped in retirement to travel the world. So far we have done a pretty good job with trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and The Czech Republic. However the pandemic has stopped all of that for a while. So while waiting for Africa, Alaska and Scandinavia, our current travel is going to have to be virtual. Today’s stop is Monaco.

Monaco is one of the richest places on the planet. An estimated one-third of residents are millionaires, and the GDP per capita is $165,420 — the second-highest in the world. From the palaces to the casinos to the yachts, everywhere you look you see the wealth. Montecarlo is also home of the Grand Prix and everywhere you turn you see race cars. Hotels and private residences overlook the raceway and during the race people sit on their balconies overlooking the mayhem.

I couldn’t”t participate this year or volunteer much because of my back but since the race comes down or street I could still cheer and take pictures.

Pittsburgh’s Most Musical 5K Race

Each year near the end of August Pittsburgh has one of its best 5k races. There are a number of things that make Run around The Square</em> different. The race goes through the cobblestone streets of Pittsburgh’s Regent Square Neighborhood and then through Frick Park ending in Fern Hollow in the midst of the park.

At the end of the race Regent Square’s famous Hot Dog Shop serves up free hot dogs and beer to the crowd in the park and other local business also offer water, snacks and free merchandise to entrants.

However what really makes the race unique is the music. Along the route and near each water stop you will find different musicians. A tuba player, a rock band, a salsa band are just a few entertaining the runners and walkers. Of course I am prejudiced because I live across the street from singer/songwriter Matt Aquiline of Matt Aquiline and The Dead End Streets. I recommend you give them a listen.

Run Around the Square–Women’s Winner

For our second full year in Pittsburgh we decided to become more involved in the community and served on the Board of Directors for Run Around The Square. We met a lot of new people and for the first time we helped the race to arrange for a professional race photographer.

After watching the winner cross the finish line, I wondered if they would put up a finish line tape for the first woman to cross the finish line. To this date a woman has never bested a man in marathon or long distance races although each year the gap narrows. As I watched I saw the race crew get ready and watched as he carefully chose the right moment to dart across the course to set the tape for the first woman to finish and provide for her the same moment that the male finisher experienced. The sequence below tells the story.

Run Around the Square Winner

For our second full year in Pittsburgh we decided to become more involved in the community and served on the Board of Directors for Run Around The Square. We met a lot of new people and for the first time we helped the race to arrange for a professional race photographer.

There are really two races. The first is a fun run and people walk with their small children and pets. The second is a timed 5K race and it all ends with a giant after party in Frick Park. It is a wonderful community event that raises money for Regent Square. It is the only race I know of that provides professional musicians at the water stops and free beer and hot dogs from D’s Six Pack and Dogz (The best hot dogs in the city!) Not only that but most of the Race is through our neighborhood’s beautiful Frick Park.

I was supposed to walk in the race with my wife, but I didn’t. I sprained my knee and couldn’t answer the bell so I hung out with the race photographers at the finish line.. You can see and purchase thousands of pictures from the race by clicking here.

Run Around the Square

This year I am happy to serve on the board of Run Around The Square which is a 5K race and fun run in the Regent Square neighborhood of Pittsburgh. It is also in my opinion the best race of its kind in Pittsburgh. Now Pittsburgh has a lot of footraces including the Pittsburgh Marathon. However in our race you get to run through Frick Park and with musicians entertaining the runners along the route. At the end of the race there are free hot dogs, soft drinks and beer in Fern Hollow. It’s kind of of hard to top that and the hot dogs are from D’s SixPax and Dogz our very own Hot Dog emporium.

I will probably be writing about this a lot during the year but registration has just opened for the race which takes place on nAugust 27. To register for the 5K or the one mile fun run (with or without your dog), follow this link.
