Thinking of Mexican Sunsets

For the last few years we have traveled to warm places in the winter. Mexico, Florida and California have been our winter destinations. This year travel is not possible due to COVID-19 and the snow today has got me thinking about Mexican sunsets/

Sunset Silhouette in Mexico

A family watching the sunset over Cancún in the province of Quinatara Roo, Mexico. Every night is a little different on the blue docks of of the lagoon where people congregate to eat, drink and watch the light show. They are on an overhead walkway and the shot is taken from a bridge below.

Cemetery by The Sea

Across the channel from Cancún is the island of Isla Mujeres. It’s just a short boat ride to see a gem of real Mexico. The beaches are tranquil compared to Cancún and you can rent a golf cart, bike or motorcycle to explore the small island.

If you do go, on the south end of the island is a wonderful cemetery that is so different than American or European cemeteries it is worth the trip. Of course being an island, all the graves are above ground and with vibrant colors and unusual displays. Its worth the trip.

Reflections in Mexico

One evening in Cancún we had finished dinner at Las Isla Shopping District and while I was waiting for my wife I took some pictures of reflections in the canal. Normally when taking reflections you take the reflection with the object being reflected included in the shot. That night I only took the reflection.

The fence looks more like a painting that a photograph and has an interesting appeal.

When I saw the image during editing I rejected it as stupid. Now a few years later I looked at it again and decide to rotate it 180 degrees and I like it! Looks like a painting

Smithsonian Candidate #2…Ghost Ship

I am thinking of entering the Smithsonian Photo Contest even though I have zero chance of winning. I say that not to denigrate my ability as a photographer, but each category already has over 50,000 entries. Sure a lot of them are crap but some, well follow the link above and see for yourself. Also you can only submit work from 1/1/2016 until the present and all works with people must have a model release.

If you are familiar with any of my work (e.g. Moment and Souls) you probably realize I don’t have a lot of model releases.

Fortunately I do have some images that may qualify in other categories and will be publishing some here to see if you feel they quality. Please comment and let me know your thoughts. This is an entry in altered image category of a boat at sunset off La Isla Dora in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Ghost Ship

Sunset on Quintana Roo

Each night in The Mayan Rivera gives you another opportunity to see a magnificent sunset. This was photographed at La Isla Dora in 2018. A docked tourist pirate ship is in the foreground. Well I assume it is a tourist ship.
