Thinking of Mexican Sunsets

For the last few years we have traveled to warm places in the winter. Mexico, Florida and California have been our winter destinations. This year travel is not possible due to COVID-19 and the snow today has got me thinking about Mexican sunsets/

Chichen Itza One of The Wonders of the Modern World

I have been to only two of the wonders of the modern world. Unlike The Roman Coliseum, Chichen Itza is really a collection of wonders. Of course the the famous pyramid is the centerpiece. However, the ball field, observatory and smaller pyramids are all fascinating and worth seeing in their own right. Truly a remarkable experience.

The Squirrels of Quintana Roo

During our second walk through the Jungle on this Mexican Odyssey my wife noted that we had never seen a squirrel in the Yucatan. I think she is right although I am no expert. What you do see, almost as much as you would see squirrels, are Iguanas

They are not nearly as annoying. They don’t run around like crazy irritating every dog on the planet. They don’t throw crap at you when you are setting up a tent. They have mystique because thanks to Ray Harryhausen we think of them as dinosaurs and for some reason we all love dinosaurs.

Tulum Wildflowers

These could be weeds for all I know but I found the colors to be striking especially against the rocks of ancient ruins. The ruins are in Tulum Mexico in the state of Quintanna Roo. I love visiting Mayan ruins in Mexico, it brings out my inner Indiana Jones.

Mayan Dragon

The Mayan Museum in Cancún Mexico is divided in to two parts. There is an archaeological site with jungle ruins and some simulations of Mayan life. The interior of the museum has exhibits of Mayan culture and examples of artwork and crafts.

This colorful dragon was situated on the ground floor near the entrance to the ruins.

Beach Ride

The beaches near Tulum and shielded by a barrier reef. The Caribbean waves here are gentle and perfect for snorkeling, swimming, sand castles and when the tide is out, a beach bike ride, with a friend.

Tulum Panorama

Last year I published some images from Tulum. Tulum is the last Mayan city constructed before the Spanish invasion and conquest of Mexico. It was constructed on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in what is now the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

The city was constructed along the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean and served as a port for other Mayan cities like Coba which was the de facto capital of the Mayan Empire. The ruins are fun to visit because afterwards you can swim in the mild Caribbean waters sheltered by a large reef providing gentle waves and pure white sand. It is not as large a site as Chicha Itsa but maybe more beautiful because of the sea.

At The Beach

I am having knee surgery next week. They will undoubtedly take my blood pressure. The way I relax for a blood pressure reading is to think of this place. It doesn’t matter to me where the beach is. I just think of this scene and listen to the waves.

This beach though is north of Tulum in Quintanna Roo on the Mayan Riviera.

Mexican Beauty

Street performers in Mexico are a whole lot different than in the United States or other countries. Most wear exotic costumes and frequently have exotic pets like large snakes or or lizards with them. This group was seen performing outside the entrance to Tulum in Quintana Roo.

Mayan Ruins

Before I visited Chichén Itzá for the first time I thought there was just the one giant pyramid. I didn’t realize that there was a whole city of ruins. Since then I have visited other Mayan ruins in the Yucatan and Qunintana Roo. In fact there are many archaeological sites all through Mexico and they are not all Mayan. The Mayan people live primarily in The Yucatan and contrary to popular beliefs they are still here.

This ruin is a smaller pyramid in the jungle near the great pyramid of Chichen Itsa. The great pyramid is considered to be one of the seven wonders of the modern world. This one, not so much but it is still amazing to see it standing almost 2000 years after its construction.
