Pelican Portrait

One of my favorite birds to watch is the pelican. I probably wouldn’t feel the same way if I was a fisherman. This group was hassling a fishing boat off Captiva Island.I think the fishermen would have shot them if they thought they could get away with it. Apparently they like to eat the bait.

Moment of Hope #10

We are living in some scary times right now. I am old and have lived through others but this one is somehow different and maybe more frightening. So until it is over each day I plan to post an image that provides calmness and a moment of zen. We all need a lot of moments like these right now.

Now is a good time for America to reflect. Time at home with family and friends is quality time. Breath deep and stare into a reflective pond or fountain. What do you see? Do you like it? Can it change? Should it change? If America has to change to survive a pandemic, how do we have to change to make that happen?

Desert Fountains

One expects the desert to have little water. Of course that’s true. Try driving the back roads from California to Nevada if you need proof. However people who own property in the Palm Springs area seem obsessed with water. Small houses will frequently have fountains and large resorts have many water features from large fountains on golf courses to small little ones in gardens. Here are a couple from our recent trip.

Venice Fountain

I walked by this fountain twice before taking a picture of it. The light was all wrong, I didn’t have a tripod, It really deserves a movie but I just didn’t have time. I thought this fountain to be descriptive of the neighborhood it exists in.

Venice California is a little bit gaudy. a little bit seedy and very unique and has been for a long time. It has been for my lifetime the definitive California beach community and this fountain is a part of that essence.

Controlling Your Blood Pressure

For years I have had white coat hypertension. This is when the very sight of a Doctor or Hospital causes my blood pressure to rise. I also have real hypertension which is well controlled through diet, exercise and medicine. I have learned over the years to control my white coat hypertension by shutting my eyes and thinking of this place in Mexico. I carry this image in my brain at all times.

Beach Ride

The beaches near Tulum and shielded by a barrier reef. The Caribbean waves here are gentle and perfect for snorkeling, swimming, sand castles and when the tide is out, a beach bike ride, with a friend.

Tulum Panorama

Last year I published some images from Tulum. Tulum is the last Mayan city constructed before the Spanish invasion and conquest of Mexico. It was constructed on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in what is now the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

The city was constructed along the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean and served as a port for other Mayan cities like Coba which was the de facto capital of the Mayan Empire. The ruins are fun to visit because afterwards you can swim in the mild Caribbean waters sheltered by a large reef providing gentle waves and pure white sand. It is not as large a site as Chicha Itsa but maybe more beautiful because of the sea.

Water Towers

We began our sail from Amsterdam in the Netherlands and stood on our veranda watching the Nederlands sweep by. Eight days and 7 ports later we would wind up in Basil Switzerland. Along the Waal river in Holland we saw a few buildings that look like castles. Closer looks reveal they are not. This is a water tower or pumping station. We also saw bridge abutments designed to look like castles.

At The Beach

I am having knee surgery next week. They will undoubtedly take my blood pressure. The way I relax for a blood pressure reading is to think of this place. It doesn’t matter to me where the beach is. I just think of this scene and listen to the waves.

This beach though is north of Tulum in Quintanna Roo on the Mayan Riviera.
