Pelican Portrait

One of my favorite birds to watch is the pelican. I probably wouldn’t feel the same way if I was a fisherman. This group was hassling a fishing boat off Captiva Island.I think the fishermen would have shot them if they thought they could get away with it. Apparently they like to eat the bait.

Sunset on Quintana Roo

Each night in The Mayan Rivera gives you another opportunity to see a magnificent sunset. This was photographed at La Isla Dora in 2018. A docked tourist pirate ship is in the foreground. Well I assume it is a tourist ship.

Always Sunny at the Westin Lagunamar

The Lagunamar is a wonderful condo resort we visit periodically. It has a lovely beach although it is still west of the reef so snorkeling is not an option. It is conveniently located with walking distance of a super market and many good restaurants.

Whats make it extra special though is the service. people know you by name and they are all friendly and respectful. On cloudy days they make sure you see the sunshine at the beach.

Caribbean Sunrise

The Sun rises over the Caribbean sea in Quintana Roo. This is the scene we would see each morning from our balcony if we rose early enough that is. In January the sunrise was around 6 A.M. which explains why I have so many more sunset pictures rather than sunrise pictures.

It is a shame because the color is so different in the morning than the evening.

Have Harp Will Travel

One of the things I love about traveling in different parts of the world are the variety of street performers. In Prague they have pianos scattered around the city in public places with signs that say play me. In Paris we saw a string quartet. In Germany we saw organ grinders. In San Francisco we saw someone playing the Chapman stick.

Of course guitars, fiddles and singers are common everywhere. However In Puerto Morelos I saw a new one for the first time. We were leaving when we passed this man heading towards the sqaure. Kinda of sorry I didn’t stay around to heard him play.

Iglesia de San Jose Puerto Morelos

About a half and hour south of the Cancún Airport is the town of Puerto Morelos The town has not exploded like Cancún and Playa Del Carmen. It is still a quaint fishing village with boats for hire, street performers and quaint restaurants. There are no huge resorts but many quaint upscale condominiums and tourist hotels along a beautiful beach .

In the center of town is a community Catholic church which reflects the close relationship the people have with the sea and the fishing profession. It is small, quaint and uniquely Mexican

Friend or Foe?

When we first moved to the Pocono Mountains we would see all the deer and get real excited. Aren’t they pretty? Isn’t nature wonderful?
Our real estate agent laughed and told us that within five years we would think of them as pests. He was wrong, It only took three years. We saw the impacts of deer wasting disease and eventually our community had to vote for a deer cull. There was no hunting in our community and the deer population was unhealthy.

For the last three years we have been wintering in Florida and I love to watch birds in flight, especially large birds like pelicans. People who live there hate them, especially fisherman. They steal bait, steal the catch, poop all over their boats and stalk them well out to sea. Here is a small group pestering a fisherman in a bay near Captiva island Florida.

Scenic Views Candidate #5—Pelican at Sunset

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. Right now I am reviewing images that are scenic or from nature. This is the silhouette of a pelican over the Gulf of Mexico taken at sunset on Sunset Beach Florida.

Miscellaneous Pelicans

If you read this blog regularly you are probably saying, ok enough with the pelicans already! Well as you know I like these birds but I promise that these are the last for a while. I have been going through my images getting ready to clear the decks for our fall trip to Europe. I found these two images and thought they were too good to keep to myself. They were taken during February 2016 in Madeira Beach Florida at John’s Pass.

Night Fishing

We spent last February watching sunsets from a rented condo on Sunset Beach in Treasure Island Florida. We would rarely see pelicans in the Gulf of Mexico, I think due to strong winds. If we would see them it would be in early morning and usually just a solitary pelican. A short walk away on the intercostal waterway and Boca Ciega Bay we would see many of the giant birds fishing all the time. On my last night on the beach I saw this solitary pelican skimming in front of the sunset as if he came to say goodbye.
