Selective Color Revisited #2–Color Guard

I published the full color version of this picture earlier this week in Changing of The Guard. I thought the guard got lost in the image so I did a little bit of editing to make him stand out.

Thanks to All That Serve

I realize that wars are necessary sometimes. However it now seems that we are engaged in forever wars and the military industrial complex prefers to have conditions of permanent warfare, something I do not support. However the people that do battle for our country deserve nothing less that our full support and respect.Today we are in a different kind of war against a virus and the soliders in this war are no lesser heroes than those who do battle over seas.

Memorial Day is a day when we pay tribute to all that went to battle on our behalf. Thanks for your service and to the families that have lost loved ones, thanks for your sacrifice.

Tempio Maggiore di Roma

We have made an effort when traveling through Europe to not only visit famous Churches but also the Synagogues. In each city we find the ancient ghettos and houses of worships that our ancestors visited. Tempio Maggiore di Roma is truly one of the most magnificent Synagogues on the planet. Like most Synagogues and few Churches it is guarded by the military the necessity of which makes me sad.

Our tour was allowed in at the end of a wedding which made our visit even more special. There is also a wonderful Jewish Museum which I will cover in a future post.

Changing of The Guard

I am not a big fan of the military and soliders. I appreciate the sacrifices they make but I am not very knowledgable or interested in military things. That said I love the pomp and circumstance of the changing of the guard. I have seen it at the Tomb of The Unknown Solider and more recently at Prague Castle.

Prague Castle is the current seat of government for the Czech Republic and has been the seat of emperors and kings dating back to 9th century. The ceremony is therefore guarded by active soliders in addition to the ceremonial guard.

It’s time to pause and give thanks to all of those who serve and defend our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Happy Veterans Day and thanks to all for your service.

Independence Day

Changing of the Guard at Prague Castle

We were fortunate to be at Prague Castle during the changing of the guard. I did manage to get some video but it is a little jumpy because i was running backwards as they walked towards me. This is a still from the video which will be included in my upcoming video focused on European street musicians. Their marching cadence is a form of music if you ask me. The whole thing made me think of the movie Duck Soup for some reason.

Civility and Politics

I don’t usually comment or post about politics on this blog. In the last six years of writing this blog my political posts have only been a plea for people to get out and vote. Once again I encourage people do so. I will not be in the United States for most of the time leading up to the election. THANK GOD! Elections have always been contentious but this year has set a new low. We can blame it on the candidates but it is not really their fault.

Society is more polarized and angry that it has been since the Vietnam war and our political landscape is merely a reflection of how fractious and divided the United States has become. I have always felt guilty for the way we disrespected those who returned from the war in Vietnam but now the pendulum has swung the other way and if you don’t worship the flag and display your love of country many think you are not American. I yearn for simpler times when politicians were less controlled by lobbyists and Americans were less judgmental of each other’s actions but I recognize those times have passed. We are encouraged by social media to have an opinion about everything and correct and judge each other.

I realize like Roland Deschain that the world has moved on and I struggle to move with it. Once again i encourage you to vote and not to be discouraged. I know many people don’t even register to vote for silly reasons like they don’t want to serve on a jury or their religion prevents them from voting. So a nation that preaches democracy to the rest of the world and feels it has the right to take democracy to all has one of the lowest voter turnouts of any nation. This is shameful.
