Missing the Phipps

I miss my friends and relatives but also just miss people in general. Each season we would make a visit to the Phipps Conservatory, The Aviary and Pittsburgh Museums. As members you begin to recognize the staff members. I hope they are all OK. Here are some pictures from previous visits to the Phipps Conservatory of Pittsburgh.

The Phipps Summer Garden

A Perfect Bloom

The Phipps Summer Garden

Summer at The Phipps

Its still not to late to see the Summer Garden at The Phipps Conservatory. In addition to all your summer favorites, there are some less flashy yet interesting plants to see.

I especially like plants that look like other things. This bromeliad looks like a star. And the plant below that almost looks like lace. The Phipps is one of Pittsburgh’s cultural treasures and deserves at least a couple of visits each year.

Waterfall at The Phipps

If you follow this blog you know that we visit The Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh frequently. Normally we visit in the fall and winter months so I had never noticed the waterfall before. It is on the outside deck and I am sure it is only operational in the late spring and summer months.

Waterfall at The Phipps

Florida Waterfall

This title is really a stretch. Florida doesn’t really have waterfalls. The highest elevation in the state id 345 feet so the terrain doesn’t lend itself to what a Pennsylvanian would call a waterfall. There are cascades and rapids however in some of the rivers and streams. Florida also has wonderful and well run State Parks with great facilities that are well maintained. This picture was taken at Hillsborough River State Park north of Tampa.

I didn’t have a tripod but was able to rest the camera on a railing and take this picture at a shutter speed of 1/8th of a second at f22 with an ISO of 100. Normally I would use a tripod for this kind of shot but have been impressed with Nikon’s VR {vibration reduction} lenses and risked the shot. It turned out so well I am sorry I did not experiment with even slower shutter speeds.

On the Road to Hana

Driving the Hana Highway is a once in the lifetime experience, well at least I won’t do it again. I hate driving close to the edge of narrow roads without guard rails but fortunately my wife doesn’t and we got to take this wonderful drive. If you stop to look at every waterfall along the way it will take you all day. If I were to drive it again, I would definitely get a hotel or Inn and not drive back until the next day. Maui has two great drives in addition to this one. The scenic road to Haleakala and Route 340 on the West side which is my personal favorite.
