Winter Joy at The Phipps Conservatory

I miss visiting the Phipps Conservatory of Pittsburghthis year especially in the dead of winter in the dead of winter. When your skin is dry and you are cold and chilly it is wonderful to spend an hour or two in warm humidity smelling the blooms of orchids and other fragrant flowers. It’s almost as good as a spa treatment. I have no idea what the actual name is of this orchid but it brought me joy in the cold of winter so to me it is Winter Joy.

Winter Joy

Moment of Hope #9

We are living in some scary times right now. I am old and have lived through others but this one is somehow different and maybe more frightening. So until it is over each day I plan to post an image that provides calmness and a moment of zen. We all need a lot of moments like these right now.

Even in the darkest of time there is always some light and joy. Your job while you are in quarantine is to find some joy each day and latch on to it. I call this one dark waters. It was photographed in Tampa Florida and edited in Pittsburgh PA using photoshop.

As the pandemic continues so does Spring. Time to be looking for tulips as the daffodils begin to fade. Each flower is a moment of beauty and joy and provides hope. These are from are garden in Pittsburgh a few years ago before the deer ate them. Tulips are like candy for deer.

Pittsburgh has a number of beautiful spring days. If you have a garden enjoy it, maintain it. If you don’t have a garden now is a perfect chance to plant one.

This is a pond in the spring. Pond are full of hope and new life in the spring. You can hear the peepers and see the baby turtles on their banks. Sitting and gazing into a pond and listening to the sounds provide and uplift to the human spirit.

A Perfect Bloom

A Lily Found

I haven’t been able to shoot much this summer being hobbled by a bad back. I have been spending my time instead editing and reimagining old images. I shot this lily years ago at our house in the Pocono Mountains. I remember thinking when I took it that I was treating this like a portrait with a key light. The shadows on the leaves of the stamen create a certain drama to the image.

Regent Square Day Lily #3… Pictures of Lily

We planted a lot of day lilies under the misconception that deer would not eat them. They destroyed the ones in our front garden but relentless application of repellent has saved the beauties in our back garden. The dark purple ones will be next to bloom. I think I will call this one Pictures of Lily. Thank you The Who.
