Autumn Country Road

Country roads in Pennsylvania are special in the Autumn. We use to live in Pike County and travel this road almost every day. Familiarity can cause boredom but this road always seemed to be changing. In the spring the colors were faint but in autumn they were explosive. The same is true where we now live in Pittsburgh. You don’t have to go far to find a road with explosive autumn color and the drive becomes the destination.

North Park Exploratory Mission

We began to follow a Facebook group called North Park Eagles. We had no idea there were Eagles there. Growing up in Pittsburgh we were more familiar with the city Parks and South Park than North Park. So we decided to search for the Eagles realizing we would probably not find any. We didn’t but we now know the park a little better and where o search for them.

Still it was a beautiful day and we had a great hike and found one curious young buck that left his group in the tall grass to check us out.

Autumn Reflections

I am of a firm belief that good photographs tell a story, reveal a mystery or in some way createan emotional response. I do record scenes just because they are pretty but rarely offer them for sale or publish them, I identify more with Henri Cartier-Bresson than Ansel Adams. Sure I could have just take a picture of this colorful foliage. However, the story for me is how the reflections of the trees change the nature of the swampy wetland.

Ghosts of Köln

Years ago I learned the basics of blur motion photography. Placing the camera on a tripod and using a slow shutter speed allows you to create blurred motion on a still background. If you pan with the movement you will create another type of blur effect like this one entitled Running Deer. I have often thought of this process as creating ghosts.

While relaxing in Köln on the waterfront I decided to try to make some “ghosts” using a monopod. A lot of my attempts didn’t work. A monopod is not as good as a tripod but I still managed to capture a couple of ghosts.

Köln Fall Foliage

This autumn we will be returning to Europe. Our last visit was during the autumn of 2016. This time we will be in Spain and Italy and I am sure we will not see any colorful fall foliage there. I remembered being disappointed in seeing little dramatic foliage during our last trip through Germany and Austria.

Looking through the files I think I was mistaken. These were taken in Köln (Cologne) Germany during that trip.

Autumn in The Pocono Mountains

The fall foliage was really poor this year around Pittsburgh. It was too long too late and the fall colors were sporadic. So I had to return to the vault to find a good image of the Autumn. This was takn a few years ago in Pike County Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh Autumn

Pittsburgh is a city of hills and trees. The hills create the diverse neighborhoods that make up Pittsburgh’s blend of ethnic cultures from Germantown to Polish Hill. The trees are a wonderful blend of hardwood trees that make for amazing parks and spectacular fall colors. This view of downtown from Schenley Oval.

Finally Autumn

Finally, Autumn has arrived although the show from nature may not be as great this year because of the warm and dry weather. Searching the archives I found this. Taken a block from our old house in the Delaware National Forrest. The Pocono mountains are exquisite this time of year.

Best Year for Color–2012

Every year people flock to our state to see the beautiful Autumn foliage. If you don’t live in Pennsylvania you will be awed and happy you made the visit. However observing this every year makes some people, especially photographers obnoxious and cynical critics. Different weather factors impact the color. The temperature, humidity, rain fall and wind all impact how colorful and widespread the foliage panorama will appear.

2012 was the perfect storm for fall color in The Northeast. Of course it is a regional thing, one year the color may be better in Maine than Pennsylvania or New Hampshire may be the best. However, in 2012 it was prefect throughout the region. This is a 2012 flashback taken in October 2012 in the Pocono Mountains.

Things I’ll Miss—Autumn in the Poconos

If you follow this blog you know that for some time we have been trying to sell our house and move back to Pittsburgh. Our tablets are done (DreamMap publishing in October) and it is time to come off the mountain. Of course moving is hard work so I haven’t been taking new pictures and have been thinking of how to keep the blog “alive” during this time of transition.

Although our new house is only two blocks from one of the largest parks in Pittsburgh (Frick Park) I will really miss the mountains in the autumn. One of the good things about Pittsburgh though is that besides having a wonderful park system the city is only a short drive to a wide variety of state parks. It will be fun exploring them in the autumn to find more scenes like this.
