Return To Nova Scotia Part One—Peggy’s Cove

In 1982 my wife and I visited Nova Scotia. Mostly we camped except for three nights in an inexpensive motel outside Halifax Nova Scotia. Through the yers we have traveled extensively only occasionally returning to previous locations. However, we vowed one day to return to Nova Scotia and this year we did just that. The population of Nova Scotia was just 971,395 in 2019 not much of an increase in 40 years since in 1982 it was 859,038. One of the reasons we were eager to return was the population density and friendliness of the people. In that regard it remains unchanged.

On our previous trip we stopped in the small fishing village of Peggy’s Cove on our way from Lunenburg to Halifax. We were the only people there when we stopped. Peggy’s Cove is still beautiful but now crowded with a tourist center, restaurants and shops. Unfortunately in 2005 Swissair Flight 111 crashed 8 km (5 mi) off the coast of Peggy’s Cove. This tragedy cause a curiosity boom and a lot of tourists.

It is still a beautiful spot and worth the trip and the area outside the tourist center is still quite rustic and undeveloped.

Peggy’s Cove Nova Scotia 1981

In 1981 we traveled to Nova Scotia. Those were the days of film photography and although I did some monochrome, mostly I shot 35mm color transparency film. I don’t have too many of the slides left. I either lost or had two trays of slides stolen some time in the 1980’s. I have shared some of the survivors; High Tide in Bay Of Fundy and Peggy’s Cove. This is one of the monochrome images from that trip.

Before Photoshop #4—Peggy’s Cove NS 1980

One of the last composites I ever made in the darkroom. This is actually a triple burn. I used part of an image I took in Peggy’s Cove. There were so many birds around yet I didn’t capture any in the frames I shot. The sea gull was from an image captured in Lake worth Florida and the other birds were from a picture taken in the Bay of Fundy on Rugby Neck NS.

The image was created in my darkroom in State College PA.
