A Visit To The National Aviary

One of the first things we did as we emerged from the pandemic was to renew our membership to The National Aviary. We are blessed in Pittsburgh to be the home of the only independent indoor nonprofit aviary in the United States. It is also the country’s largest aviary. Eventually some images will be uploaded to my commercial gallery

The National Aviary

Last week we returned to the National Aviary for the first time since the COVID Epidemic. We happily renewed our membership and were a little giddy to be back with our avian friends. We were wondering if some of the flamingos were the baby chicks we saw years ago. here are a few images from our recent visit.

Thinking About The National Aviary

Since returning to Pittsburgh we have been members of the National Aviary. It’s the largest Aviary in The United States and we are fortunate to have it in Pittsburgh. We go there often enough that I have my favorite birds and during this horrible pandemic I frequently wonder how they are doing. I can’t wait until we can venture out and visit again.

Flamingo at The National Aviary

Its a good time to visit The National Aviary. Although I was just there a couple of weeks ago I plan to return next week. They will reopen their remodeled Tropical Room and for the first time in decades the waterfall will be operational again.

Thanks to visitors and members they have also replaced all the glass in the room with new environmentally friendly glass.

In the wetlands room this flamingo and roseate spoonbill are friendly neighbors.

Flamingo and Roseate Spoonbill

Roseate Spoonbill at The National Aviary

In 2014 while visiting the Ding Darling Preserve in Florida I photographed a flock of spoonbills which you can see here,

In our winter visit to the National Aviary I was pleased to see the pair of spoonbills were nesting. I couldn’t get a clear shot then but on our visit last week they were quite active and I managed to get a closeup image.
