Baby Flamingos at the National Aviary

The National Aviary is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated exclusively to birds. Located in West Park on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, the National Aviary’s diverse collection comprises more than 500 birds representing more than 150 species from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild.

Right now you can see a special treat at the Aviary. Each morning they bring out the Baby Flamingos to meet the public. Maybe not quite as exciting as the baby elephant at the Zoo but they are awfully cute little creatures and learning how to walk.

Although the Aviary has been in Pittsburgh for a long time on October 27, 1993, by declaration of the U.S. Congress, the Pittsburgh Aviary was designated honorary national status and renamed the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. It is truly a one of a kind experience that can only be found in Pittsburgh.

Jason Gamrath at The Phipps Conservatory Part 3

This summer is special at the Phipps Conservatory because there is a special exhibition of the fine art glass sculptures of Jason Gamrath. There are always a few glass sculptures in the eight rooms of the conservatory but this year the exhibition adds over 80 works from the brilliant young artist. Each room is dramatically changed by the addition of his artwork. The show is not to be missed and runs throughout the summer. This is my last post on this great exhibit, if you miss it, you can’t say you weren’t warned.

The Phipps Summer Garden

I love having a membership at the Phipps because we can visited each season and see an entirely different garden. In addition to the special exhibition of the fine art glass sculptures of Jason Gamrath there is a lot to see. Its the first time I have visited the Children’s Garden and it was fun to watch the kids at play.

Short Sabbatical

I am taking a short sabbatical from posting while I perform the second edit of our new DreamMap Novel entitled Worlds Apart. You may recall in the epilogue of DreamMap Jake and Rose teleport out with Stan who needs help with a problem. The second book starts in Dublin on Earth Prime immediately after they teleport. It is much darker than the first novel and ends with a series of twists and major cliffhanger pointing to the third book in the series.

I hope to be back soon with more images and posts but until then I will be off in a parallel world.

Pittsburgh’s Art All Night

This year was the 20th Anniversary of Pittsburgh’s unique art festival; Art All Night. It started in 1998 with 101 pieces of art and 200 all night art lovers. It now draws hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors. The show is not juried and free to enter and attend.

The festival runs for 24 hours beginning on Saturday and ending on Sunday afternoon in an empty warehouse in the Lawrencville neighborhood of Pittsburgh. There are two stages in that provide continuous music. Vendors sell food and beer. Volunteers tell stories to children and provide free face painting.

Saturday night is raucous with lots of beer and food being served. Sunday is relaxed and laid back and the music is less rock and more folk. This was our first year attending, next year we will go Saturday night and maybe shoot some video.
