Welcome Back!

Every summer we have special visitors as the hummingbirds fly up from the south to visit. They seem to love red flowers the best so we plant flowers specifically to attract them. They visit each day, but getting them to pose for a picture is quite difficult. You can buy a print of this one at my commercial gallery by clicking here.

Datura Blossoms

Datura is a plant that grows in warm climates and is also known as “angel’s trumpets” and “moonflower”. It has long been known to have hallucinogenic properties and commonly used by Yaqui and other Native American tribes in rituals. I have a friend who is an emergency room doctor and she talks about all the kids that come to the ER because they have ingested Datura or part of the plant. The blooms however are beautiful but you need to be careful if you have dogs or other pets if you have this plant in your garden.

Bromeliad

The Florida Botantical Garden in Largo Florida is a very large garden and nature preserve complete with a heritage village. It has beautiful walkways, plants, animals and best of all it is free. They don’t even charge for parking.

I don’t remember the name of this bromeliad but was struck by the variety of color in the leaves.

Joshua Tree California

Joshua Tree National Park is located north and east from Palm Springs California. It is a rustic and beautiful high desert spot with a very diverse horticulture. It is named after the unusual and plentiful Joshua Trees that are all through the park. The terrain is rugged high desert so bring your real hiking shoes.

Natural Patterns

This week I am posting images of patterns. The thing that I like about this one is that there are two vines fighting each other for real estate. The idea of vines on brick buildings looks better than it is in reality. Vines will eventually destroy the bricks and while they are working on the bricks they attract insects and birds which might not be appreciated by an apartment tenant. Opuntia Cactus

Opuntia, also known as nopales or paddle cactus is a plant native to the southwestern USA. They are fairly easy to grow at home if you have the right lighting conditions. This one was photographed at the Garfield Conservatory in Chicago, Illinois. You can buy a print of this image by clicking here.

The Devil’s In the Details

Although I consider myself to be first and foremost a photojournalist, I like all sorts of photography. I love photographing animals, sports contests, concerts and scenic views. Sometimes though, the devil is in the detail. Macro and closeup photography provides a different perspective and view of the world. I love photographing architectural patterns and closeup photography of plants and foliage. One of these succulent leafs is beautiful all by itself but when you photograph the foliage of many, the plant itself changes into a natural mosaic. This was photographed at Chicago’s Garfield Conservatory. You can buy a print of this image by clicking here.
