Doors and Doorways

Europe has many magnificent old buildings. The result is that it also has many magnificent doors and doorways. Here are a few I have collected over the years.

En Bruges

I have never been to Venice where some people say the canals are beautiful and others say they smell like garbage or death. I have been to Amsterdam which is a beautiful city and loaded with wonderful canals which are actually part of the city’s flood control system. I have heard the canals are full of abandoned bicycles but can vouch they don’t smell of death or garbage.

Then there is Bruges which is sometimes called the Venice of the North. A magnificent ancient city with a wonderful network of canals. I have been there a number of times and each time I am struck again with the beauty of the ancient town and the cleanliness and blue waters of the canals. Everyone should visit at least once and if you can’t make the trip then at least watch the wonderful movie En Bruges and you will see what you are missing.

Begin the Beguine

I first learned about Beguines when I began to travel to Belgium in the early the late 1980’s. My only previous reference point was my father singing Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine” when I was a kid. The Beguines were a religious order of the Catholic Church that focused on healing the sick and wounded. In 1776, the City of Bruges dedicated a new “Beguine House” and Chapel near the town center. It is beautiful, quiet and pristine place to visit while touring the city. Many Americans are drawn to the entry gate since the dedication date is also the date of our nation’s birth. It makes you realize how old Europe. You can buy a print of this image on my commercial gallery by clicking here.

The Beguine House Gate

Behind the Blue Door

This doorway once led to the inner secure part of Bruges Belgium. The town centre was fortified with walls and on the other side of this door was the original home of the Beguines, a religious order dedicated to helping the sick and injured. The Beguines were relocated to a different part of the town in the 1700’s. The area is now used for low cost hosting for the elderly. En Bruges

When most people visit Belgium they tend to go to Antwerp and Brussels. Both are wonderful cities in their own right. However, if you have just one place to visit in Belgium it should be Bruges. This medieval city is a gem of medieval culture. During the middle ages Bruges was one of the most important city states in Europe and a shipping center. Now it is a wonderful restored city and frequently called the Venice of the North because of its network of canals.
