Lunch in Porto Azzurro

In 2019 we took a cruise from Barcelona to Rome. One of the biggest surprises of the cruise was the wonderful island of Elba. One of the biggest surprises of Elba was the little village of Porto Azzurro. Every place we had been to had been fairly crowded. Even the port town in Elba of Portoferrio was jumping. However the little village of Porto Azzurro was very relaxed. A lovely place for lunch and a leisurely stroll.

The Tuscan Island of Elba

Our cruise ship, The Azamara Pursuit was a small luxury cruise liner. Because of that we could visit smaller ports that can’t be reached by the large cruise ships.

When The Pursuit docked in Portoferraio it was the largest ship in the harbor and the only cruise liner there on that day. This made our stay on Elba more enjoyable. Portoferraio is one of the most beautiful natural harbors I have ever seen. The mountainous island has an interesting history dating back to the Etruscans. The town of Portoferraio is beautiful and filled with shops, cafe’s and beautiful beaches.

Napoleon’s House on Elba

In the Treaty of Fontainebleau, the Allies exiled Napoleon to Elba, an island of 12,000 inhabitants in the Mediterranean off the Tuscan coast. They gave him sovereignty over the island and allowed him to retain the title of Emperor, while his wife and son took refuge in Austria. He only lived there for ten months before he escaped and raised an army while marching to Paris. Eventually defeated at Waterloo and sent to the island of St, Helena in the Atlantic Ocean where he died.

His house on Elba was small but tucked into a peaceful hill near the enter of the island. The house is in the process of being refurbished but much of the furniture and art was sold off by Napoleon’s sister to pay off family debts.

Italian Statues Part Two

One of the great things about European cities is the collection of beautiful statues in each city. We also have beautiful outdoor sculptures in The United States but not done by Michelangelo or Donatello to name a couple of the more famous ones. The statues in Italy are amazing. Every city, every courtyard, every plaza is full of beautiful out door sculpture, some famous some not. Here are some more from out recent tour in Italy.

Rome Domes

Rome has the most Obelisks of any city in the world. That includes 13 ancient Roman and Egyptian obelisks. That said, it has even more domes. There are literally hundreds of domes with in the city. It was a favorite building technique during the growth of the ancient city. Some are spectacular and some not so much so or in need of repair. Many are parts of churches usually in the bell towers.

These are just a few that we saw during our recent trip.

Italian Doorways Part 2

On each visit to Europe I seem to wind up taking images of doorways. Doors fascinate me because of their plurality. They are both an entry and exit. Some doorways in Europe are literally thousands of years old. Here are some I captured in October of 2019 in Rome, Florence and Elba.

Porto Azzurro Elba

On our cruise we were excited to visit Elba. It is of course the famous place of exile for Napoleon and we were excited to see Napoleon’s residence. To be honest I was glad we took the tour but Napoleon’s house was the least inspiring part of our trip to Elba.

Our cruise ship docked in Portoferraio which is one of the most beautiful natural harbors I have ever seen. The mountainous island has an interesting history dating back to the Etruscans. The town of Portoferraio is beautiful but as we traveled across the island we saw many other gems. For me the tiny little commune of Porto Azzurro was one of the highlights.
