Purple Haze

If you follow this blog you know I like to take pictures of flowers but basically have no idea what most of them are. Fortunately, I have a wonderful wife who is an a fantastic gardener and reads everything. I kid her and call her (reedie). Reedie’s gotta read and I am sure she probably knows what this is. I just call it pretty. It was in the orchid room of the Selby Garden in Sarasota Florida so I am assuming it is an orchid.

Plant from Space!

OK I have no idea what this plant is. It could be from Mars for all I know. I go to a garden and take pictures. MY wife and friends read the information and maybe tell me about it but when I am composing I have learned to shut out distractions. This is frequently to the displeasure of anyone that I am with. I think this is some sort of Aloe but whatever it is I find its beauty and coloration unusual.

A Plant With Knees

I am not sure why they call them cypress knees. They look kind of eerie and I can imagine a slow speed canoe chase through a foggy wetlands where dodging the knees is the difference between life and death. This solitary one looks like the head of Valcor The Luck Dragon from the The Neverending Story rising from a lake.

Red Bird

I have seen yellow Birds of Paradise bloom in many gardens and growing wild in Hawaii. I also thought they only came in yellow and white until I saw this specimen. Photographed at the Selby Gardens in Sarasota Florida during the winter Orchid Show.

Fan Plant

I have only ever seen this plant in the tropics or in conservatories and have no idea what it is called or what type of plant it is. I do love the way it filters the sunlight. I can see having a wall of these plants in an outdoor living space providing a natural sun screen around a pool or grotto.

Death from Above

I came across this scene in The Selby Gardens of Sarasota Florida during the orchid show. The blue heron was overheard saying,” I told you to shut up about that damn insurance.” I turned to my friend Jerry saying I didn’t know that herons ate geckos. I think of them as fisher birds. He replied with a shrug, “Well somebody has to eat them.”

Portrait of a Pelican

If you read my blog you know that one of favorite subjects is the pelican. The Florida Brown Pelican has a wingspan of up to nine feet and weighs 30 pounds. The white pelican is even larger and the second biggest bird in North America after the California Condor. They are actually bigger than the Bald Eagle and much more plentiful. I love these birds because in flight they look a little like Pterodactyls as they glide through the air. This one was actually nice enough to sit for a portrait.

Sunset at Sunset Beach

We stayed for one month on Sunset Beach, a small residential community in Treasure Island Florida. On every clear evening people gathered to watch the sunset, surf or stroll on the beach during the magic hour.

Ooops!

We were visiting Selby Gardens in Sarasota Florida when we took a break to watch the sea birds. I saw this sail boat and was admiring it until I realize its keel must be stuck in the mud. We were wondering how it stood upright and then realized it must be really embedded in the mud to not have keeled over.

Sunset Beach

Gulf Boulevard runs along the Gulf of Mexico before it turns into Blind Pass at St. Petersburgh Beach. After a while it begins again and runs towards the end of the St. Petersburg peninsula. Where it turns into Blind Pass in Treasure Island there is a small spur called Gulf Boulevard West that runs along the Gulf before it ends at Boca Ciega Bay.

This sour is known as Sunset Beach and is a small community within Treasure Island. It is a tranquil Gulf community that is mostly residential with only two restaurants/bars and few other businesses. When the sun sets people come out on their decks and stroll along the beach. It is not crowded but as the sun falls into the Gulf you can hear cheers and applause along the beach.
