Things I’ll Miss–Wetlands in the Autumn

If you follow this blog you know that for some time we have been trying to sell our house and move back to Pittsburgh. Our tablets are done (DreamMap publishing in October) and it is time to come off the mountain. Of course moving is hard work so I haven’t been taking new pictures and have been thinking of how to keep the blog “alive” during this time of transition.

Although our new house is only two blocks from one of the largest parks in Pittsburgh (Frick Park) I will really miss the wetlands in the autumn. One of the good things about Pittsburgh though is that besides having a wonderful park system the city is only a short drive to a wide variety of state parks. It will be fun exploring them in the autumn to find more scenes like this.

Young Buck

We live in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania bordering the Delaware State Forrest . There is no hunting in our community but there is just outside and we can frequently hear shotgun and rifle shots. My wife says I am wrong but it seems to me at this time of year there are more deer visible inside our community. Have they “learned” to high out here this time of year? Is it instinct or learned behavior? In any case it is not legal to hunt a Buck this young in Pennsylvania. You can purchase an image by clicking here

Autumn Sunset

Winter comes quickly to the mountains. 40 miles away, the leaves have not yet hit peak color but here in the mountains the leaves are on the ground. You can see the shifting color and angle of the morning sun. The evening sunsets are cooler in color temperature but still brilliant to behold.

On a Country Lane

Walking through the Pocono Mountains along rural lanes and paths is always improved with a loyal companion at your side. This is Deuce taking the point on walk through the forest on a beautiful day like today, not too long ago. You can buy a print of this image on my gallery by clicking here.

Maple Swamp

Wetlands is the new politically correct word for a swamp. Just sounds better doesn’t it? Wetlands in Pennsylvania are homes to bears, snakes and migratory birds and a valuable water source. In the autumn they take on a wonderful color like this spot in the Pocono Mountains. You can purchase a print of this image and see others on my commercial site by clicking here.

Pennsylvania Country Road

Pennsylvania is beautiful this time of year. This is Maple Ridge Drive in The Hemlock Farms Community in the Pocono Mountains of Pike County. Most of the roads in my neighborhood look like this in October but seem to post a warning, Winter is Coming!

Sunrise at Elm Beach

Earlier this week I posted “Dock on Elm Beach” which received some nice attention. This is another image from the same session taken during a morning sunrise which I hope you enjoy.

Pocono Wetlands

Our house in the Pocono Mountains backs up to the Maple Swamp. I thought this sounded kind of bad when we moved there but this is a northern mountains swamp at an elevation of 1,600 feet not a lowland swamp. It doesn’t have quicksand and leeches that you may find in the south. Our swamps have hardwood trees, foxes, coyotes and bears and in the spring and autumn show the rainbow of colors that is our seasonal change.

Dock on Elm Beach

I think September and October are two of the best months for living in the Pocono Mountains. The weather is near perfect, the summer crazies have gone home and it’s too early for most hunters and skiers. The pace settles down, the air is crisp and mild and the colors are beautiful. This is a small lake about two miles from my house in Hemlock Farms. You can purchase a print of this and see other images and apparel at my commercial site.

Winter is Coming!

No, I am not talking about “Game of Thrones”. In the Pocono mountains winter comes early though, just like it does for the Starks. Last year we had our biggest snowfall in October. The leaves were not completely off the trees when we got our surprise snowfall last year and it made a colossal mess. I am hoping for even less snow this year, I hate winter!
