The Road to Haleakala

A must see destination in Maui is Haleakala which is an inactive volcano at the island’s center. Most visitors get up in the middle of the night to see the sunrise over the crater. If you do that however you miss another wonderful sight. This is west Maui in the morning sun.

Bavaria–The Alps

I live on a mountain. I have also traveled a lot through different mountain ranges in Colorado,California,Utah,New Mexico,Maine,Canada,Pennsylvania,North Carolina etc. It is amazing how different mountains can look and yet so similar at the same time. A mountain in Pennyslvania and one in Tennessee can look very much alike but you wouldn’t confuse them with the Rockies.

These are the Alps in Germany near the Austrian border. I don’t think these look like any other mountains I have seen but can’t say what it is that makes them look so different. I have never been to the Canadian but this doesn’t look like Colorado to me.

Just Another Road

Yesterday I posted an image of Canyonlands NP in Utah. You don’t have to go into a park to see the natural beauty of the land. This is on a state highway headed towards Bryce Canyon National Park not far from Panguitch Utah.

Canyonlands

Out of all the states I have visited, Utah was the biggest surprise. I don’t know what I expected but it seemed that every turn of the road brought new vistas that were prettier than the last. This image was a throw away image. I never looked at it twice until today. I had such wonderful shots of the hoodoos of Bryce canyon and the delicate sculptures of Arches National Park. I never looked at this one as being special but now decades later I think it is quite a nice image. This is Canyonlands National Park near Moab Utah.

Backyard Buck

I was going to stop posting images of deer with yesterday’s post but this guy looks so majestic, I couldn’t help myself. I promise, something else tomorrow. If you want to purchase a print of this image click here.

One thing I will miss when we move from the mountains is my wife casually saying, “nice buck out there.” She was knitting by the window when this dude came around yesterday and posed for this portrait.

First Snow

Today, old man winter fired a warning shot over over our bow. Sure today it was just a small flurry, but I’m not fooled. This is from the Halloween snow a couple of years ago. If you don’t like snow like me it’s time to flee!

Autumn Sunset

Winter comes quickly to the mountains. 40 miles away, the leaves have not yet hit peak color but here in the mountains the leaves are on the ground. You can see the shifting color and angle of the morning sun. The evening sunsets are cooler in color temperature but still brilliant to behold.

Clouds and Trees

I love overcast days in the autumn. The sun breaks through and acts like a key-light for highlighting natures wonder. Soon this backyard scene of ours will become all white and we will be on a beach somewhere else.
