Spring Flower Show at the Phipps Conservatory

The season has changed so it’s time for another visit to the Phipps Conservatory of Pittsburgh for the Spring Flower Show. This year we went early on my birthday and the show has only been open for a week. We will probably visit again in a couple of weeks which is the benefit of membership.

Cathedral of Learning April 10,2019

April 10 is my birthday and one of the ways we celebrated was by going to see The Spring Flower Show at The Phipps Conservatory. It was such a beautiful day I didn’t want to go inside. A shot of the Cathedral of Learning form the walkway leading into the Phipps.

A Perfect Bloom in Our Pittsburgh Garden

Each year I photograph the blooms in our garden and at other gardens around Pittsburgh. My trained eye can usually find a problem with the bloom. Part of the leaf is missing, it has a spot, a bug is eating it or the weather got to it before I did.

This one looks like a pretty good daffodil to me, close to a perfect bloom.

Today’s Daffodils in Regent Square

It was raining so much the other day I thought our daffodils would get beaten to a pulp. In today’s warm sun they look just fine however.

Coming Soon to a Pittsburgh Garden Near You

In some parts of the United States you can’t grow daffodils outside. Bulbs require a period of cold and in warm climates they force them to bloom inside and they can be purchased as annuals. In the northeast though, they begin to poke their heads out of the grown and as Spring arrives pride fresh color reminding us of the circle of life.

I love the change of seasons and each Spring I find fresh hope by watch our city change from the drop of winter to the bright colors of Spring.

A Brace of Pigeons at The National Aviary

The National Aviary always has surprise for me. Every time we go we try to spend time talking to the docents and staff who are full of interesting information.

Pigeons to me are the squat grey birds you see eating trash in ever city in The United Sates. Yet the aviary has many varieties of pigeons. Last week I posted an image of a nesting blue pigeon. This pair is maybe not quite as stunning but beautiful birds in their own right.

Polly Has a Friend at The National Aviary

Every time I go to the The National Aviary I take pictures of the large blue parrot who I affectionately call Polly. She has always been a solo act and too beautiful not to photograph. However this time she had a friend.

There are more birds in the private part of the Aviary than there are on display. I found that out this visit, unfortunately you can’t visit the other habitats. This explains though why you might see different birds each time you visit. Rotating them helps keep the animals from stressing out.

Stunning Pigeon at The National Aviary

The National Aviary is the largest bird zoo in America and a true Pittsburgh treasure. Fun to visit in the winter when it is cold outside and you can stroll through tropical wetlands.

Believe it or not, this beauty is actually a pigeon. Not your average street eagle for sure and caught here sitting on her nest in newly remodeled The Tropical Rainforest habitat at the aviry.

Eagle Talk at The National Aviary

Every day at 11:30 The National Aviary has an Eagle Talk. Today’s bird was a rescued bald eagle that fell out of its nest as a baby and has been nursed to a healthy adult at the aviary.

Point Breeze Christmas Tree

I really love when neighborhoods decorate existing trees with lights> It doesn’t have to be a pine tree! I saw this the other night when going out to dinner in Point Breeze and love the non traditional tree. Point Breeze is a small neighborhood with two really good restaurants.
