Fort William Henry Inn

Lake George is a beautiful setting in the Adirondack Mountains. It has a very old history for a new world settlement dating back to the before the French and Indian war. French missionaries settled the area in the 1600’s. There is however no evidence remaining of French culture in the area.

This is probably due to the fact that the English garrison at at Fort William Henry was sieged and eventually everyone massacred during the French-Indian War. Although the British eventually won this pre-revolutionary struggle, French culture was largely driven out of New York State. The Fort has been restored and is now a Museum and next to the Museum is the Fort William Henry Inn which is a popular vacation destination. Every day young pipers welcome tourists and cannon-fire greets the day.

Pittsburgh Patterns

I love modern architecture when the sun sets creating unique patterns. I took a few pattern images in Chicago a few years ago along the Chicago River. This the first one I have done in Pittsburgh. Shot from PNC Park during a Bucs game.

Three Rivers Arts Festival

Each year during the first two weeks of June, Pittsburgh hosts the three rivers arts festival. The events take place at the confluence of the Ohio River at Point State Park where the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers meet. There are free concerts, ethic foods and fantastic art for sale in addition to a juried art show. We didn’t have a lot of time to spend this year, a Pittsburgh Pirate game beckoned and it WAS hot. We did manage to get a couple of photos to share.

The Black Rock Negative Energy Absorber was a temporary exhibit that travels the country. You touch the black rock and it absorbs all your negative energy. No really!

Another temporary installation were Dogs Under the Bridge. You go under the bridge to get to the vendors and the park and these quite well behaved dogs were there to great you.

This guy was pathetic. His suit was taped together and he walked very slowly with his head hung. It was almost 90 degrees and I am sure he scared more kids than not.

A great place to chill out is at the fountain built on the spot where The Ohio River begins.

Weathertop

The Gulf Building in Pittsburgh is a national landmark and one of the city’s art deco masterpieces. Prior to the late 1970s, the entire multistory structure at the top of the building was neon-illuminated, changing colors to provide a weather forecast that could be seen for many miles. The building manager Edward H. Heath used the Gulf Oil colors to create a simplified forecast: steady blue meant colder and fair; flashing blue meant colder with precipitation; steady orange meant warmer and fair; flashing orange meant warmer with precipitation. In an effort to conserve energy, the weather beacon was abandoned for a while.

However thanks to modern lighting and in partnership with KDKA-TV, the Gulf Tower has been retrofit with a modern, automated LED weather beacon that will tell a more complete forecast than ever before. Since 2012 each floor tells part of the weather forecast.

44th floor – temperature
43rd floor – temperature
42nd floor – temperature
41st floor – precipitation
40th floor – humidity
39th floor – wind speed

Kennedy Space Center

I have spent a lot of time in Florida. My parents lived there for a while and we have life long friends in Tampa. We went to Disneyworld as young married adults and returned four times with our daughter. We have visited the Florida Keys, Universal Studios and I remember once a lion climbing on my dad’s car when we went to Lion Country Safari. In all those visits we had never been to The Kennedy Space Center.

This year we finally made it and it was worth the wait. The place is huge and the bus tour takes you right out to the launch pads and next to the Vehicle Assembly Building . The size of everything is gigantic and standing next to the even the smaller rockets is breathtaking. If you haven’t visited it is a wonderful day when visiting Florida.

Big Blue

The Blue Heron is a beautiful fisher bird that migrates to Florida and other southern states during the winter. There is something about this particular one that made me think that this bird knew exactly how pretty it was. The bird kept turning as we walked along a boardwalk almost as if posing for a photograph.

Florida Brown Pelican

If you follow this blog you have come to realize that I love Pelicans. I photograph them whenever I can and even offer Pelican apparel on my commercial site. Yet as many as I have photographed, I have still not captured the “money shot”. The shot that I visualize is a Pelican rising out of the water with a fish in his mouth. I guess I have to keep taking pictures of them. This one was captured in flight off Merritt Island in Florida.

Knees

I never knew until recently that cypress trees have knees. I always thought that they were dead cypress trees but apparently they are not. Nobody really knows why they exist but harvesting them is illegal in Florida because it affects the health of the tree.
