Millennium Park–Tenth Anniversary

The Chicago Park District is the oldest and largest park district in the U.S. It has the distinction of spending the most per capita on its parks, even more than Boston in terms of park expenses. The Chicago Park District oversees more than 580 parks with over 8,100 acres of parkland as well as 24 beaches, 77 pools, 11 museums, two world-class conservatories, 16 historic lagoons and 10 bird and wildlife gardens that are found within the city limits.

Lincoln Park was Chicago’s first large park and Millennium Park is the newest large park. Millennium Park contains a Frank Geary designed band shelter and auditorium and the world famous Cloudgate (The Bean) and the famous Crown Fountain. In addition to many permanent sculptures they bring in temporary installations. These giant heads are on display until December 2015. They were created by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa who also created the Crown Fountain and are there to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of Millennium Park.

Chicago Classy–The Palmer House Hotel

I have traveled a lot to Chicago over the years and stayed in most of the really good hotels. I never stayed at The Drake but had cocktails there. I have stayed at all the Westin hotels, The Sheraton, The Chicago Hilton,The Hyatt, The Intercontinental, the Ritz and many others. Last week we stayed in a suite at the Palmer House as part of my daughter’s wedding. Is it the most beautiful in Chicago? Who knows. It is certainly in the same class as the Intercontinental and the Ritz and one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. Not only is it beautiful but the service and attention by the entire staff was perfect.

Second City Heads

I know New Yorkers don’t want to believe this but Chicago is called “The Second City” since it rebuilt itself after the Great Chicago Fire. Chicago has many nicknames, The Windy City and The City That Works among them. Theodore Dreiser called it “This Florence of the West”. I love the architecture and public art of Chicago. When I revisited Millennium Park after my daughter’s wedding, I found a wonderful new art installation that will be there for the next year or so. Like all the art in that area it is interesting and spectacular.

Super Soaker

I had never been to Chicago’s Millennium Park in the Summer before and I had only seen the Mosaic “talking” heads in the cold weather. I had no idea it was a fountain. We wandered over there after lunch and hours spent at the Art Institute Museum. I was watching the kids playing in the water when all of sudden this happened and the talking head turned in to a super gobber!

Palmer House Wave

Last week we had a suite at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago as part of our only daughter’s wedding. I was fascinated by the strange full length mirrors on our floor. I spent some time trying to get only my head in the mirror and take the shot. Couldn’t do it handheld without falling down so settled for a wave instead.

Hello from the Palmer house

Sweet Home Chicago

Last weekend my daughter was married at The Palmer House in the great American city of Chicago. I love living in the country. The beautiful vistas, dark skies and plentiful wildlife are wonderful. However, I miss the “juice” of being in the city. You don’t see something like this in the wilderness.

Candidate 11–Forever Young

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of my Photojournalism. I am only selecting from images taken in the 21st Century and not including any older analog photography. This was taken at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City. I can see these two like myself riding the Wild Mouse when we were young. Please feel free to leave comments if you agree or disagree about including them in a “best of” list.

Candidate #10–Meeting in the Park

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of my Photojournalism. I am only selecting from images taken in the 21st Century and not including any older analog photography. This was taken the Central Park in Milan Italy. They don’t have special “dog parks” in Milan and I just love the interaction of dogs and owners as this meeting took place. It seems like the only one conscious of the camera is the German Shepherd in the background. Please feel free to leave comments if you agree or disagree about including them in a “best of” list.

Battle Monument

Battle Monument is a large doric column located on Trophy Point at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. It was designed by Stanford White and dedicated in 1897 to honor Civil War veterans. It is important to remember while touring West Point that many Civil War veterans from the Confederacy were West Point graduates and honored in addition to their Union Counterparts. The view from Trophy Point is amazing and often called The Million Dollar View.

The Chapel at West Point

We toured West Point this week and it was very impressive and informative. This is the interior of the Cadet Chapel. The building was beautiful and well cared for and you can just imagine a service with “The Long Grey Line” in attendance. You have no doubt from seeing the organization of the prayer books that this is a military chapel.
