Happy Labor Day America

Now that I am retired, I think I have a deeper appreciation of those who labor. Of course I worked for a long time and still do creative work every day, but there is work and then there is labor.

I have also done some labor in my time. I worked in a commercial bakery. I worked in supermarkets. I was a cab driver. I have done photography inside nuclear reactors, steel mills and paper mills. I understand what labor is and to all of you who labor…thanks and enjoy your day!

The Wilds

On our way back from Chicago we had a wildlife adventure and visited The Wilds in Ohio. The Wilds is comprised of almost 10,000 acres of reclaimed strip-mined land. It was donated by AEP and is located in southeastern Ohio, in the foothills of Appalachia. It was created by Jack Hanna and is managed by the Columbus Zoo.  The Wilds has been involved in the reintroduction of a species once extinct in the wild and is creating prairie habitat for wildlife species that have disappeared from their former ranges.

There are a number of adventures you can embark on including an amazing zip line over the preserve. We opted for a two hour tour in a customized open air bus that holds about 25 people. You can stay overnight in luxury yurts or in a deluxe lodge. It was a wonderful experience to be this close to the animals and see so many endangered species being cared for and learn about the successful breeding programs.

Happy Birthday USA

Independence Day use to be one of my favorite holidays. Except for the fireworks. I use to love fireworks as a kid. However now I realize how upsetting they are to veterans and also to pets I have revised ny opinion. However time for a great barbecue with friends and usually great weather helps us appreciate our freedoms and hopefully we can hold on to these in troubling time.

Billy Porter at The Phipps

Pittsburgh has had its share of famous people in music and the arts. However in recent years few have been more popular than Billy Porter. William Ellis Porter II is an American actor, singer, writer, and director. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama, and he achieved fame performing on Broadway before starting a solo career as a singer and actor. This year he has come home to produce a play, perform on stage and curate the spring flower show at the Phipps Conservatory.

The show was to close last week but because of its popularity will be held over until the end of July, All the seasonal flower shows at the Phipps are amazing but this one is extra special. If you can get there you will not be disappointed.

Noir International Photography Magazine

If you follow this blog you realize I have a lot of images. My catalog is over 100,000 images. The very size of the collections has made me realize I had lost some perspective on creation of my portfolio. As a novelist I know that everyone needs an editor. Friends and family will ooh and ahh over my photographs which I enjoy immensely but they are somewhat prejudiced. I needed an outside opinion.

To help me, last year I decided to become a member of Noir International Photography Magazine. Each week I submit three images for curation. Since joining the group I have received a number of awards including Photographer of The Year and have been published in the monthly magazine multiple times. The experience has been very rewarding and energizing but is also helping me develop an excellent portfolio of monochrome images. This video is a collection of the works I have curated so far in 2023. I hope you enjoy it. stay tuned for future updates

All Gave Some, Some Gave All

I realize that wars are necessary sometimes. However it now seems that we are engaged in forever wars and the military industrial complex prefers to have conditions of permanent warfare, something I do not support. However the people that do battle for our country deserve nothing less that our full support and respect.

Memorial Day is a day when we pay tribute to all that went to battle on our behalf. Thanks for your service and to the families that have lost loved ones, thanks for your sacrifice.

Melbourne Graffiti Streets

In 1984 Keith Haring visited Melbourne Australia and created a street mural based on his famous chalk drawings in New York City. The city in its infinite wisdom decided to allow mural paintings by other artists in a number of city streets. The results are an amazingly vibrant city and very little tagging and offensive graffiti in other parts of the city.

These pictures were taken along Hosier lane. There are at least 15 other designated art areas like this. Since it is not illegal, the artists can paint in broad daylight and pose for pictures and chat with fans.

A Dolphin Story

So my son in law told me once, “Dolphins Are Jerks”. It took me a while before I heard the story behind this passionate statement. Apparently as a young man he went to a place in Florida where you could ride a dolphin. He was the last ride of the day and apparently the animal had enough and jumped on top of him, holding him down and nearly drown him. So, yah Dolphins ARE jerks or at least “event” operators in Florida are.

In any case, they are beautiful in the wild and we are fortunate to see a few on whale watch outside Auckland New Zealand
