Happy Independence Day America

Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. Except for the fireworks. I used to love fireworks as a kid. However now I realize how upsetting they are to veterans and also to pets I have revised my opinion. However time for a great barbecue with friends and usually great weather helps us appreciate our freedoms and hopefully we can hold on to these in troubling time.

Happy Independence Day at the National Aviary

I love my country and Independence Day. I don’t really like fireworks though. I worry to much about our veterans with PTSD and the dogs hiding under the bed. I like cookouts and barbecue and am not going to let the current political climate detract from celebrating our independence from Great Britain.

So what better way to celebrate than by visiting our national symbol at The National Aviary. Pittsburgh should be proud of having the largest aviary in the United States and it is currently having the tropical room refurbished but still worth visiting if only to see this nesting pair.

Independence Day

There is no place in the United States that knows how to celebrate American holidays better than New England. Since I have family there, I always spend Thanksgiving there and sometimes the 4th of July as well. A few years ago I went with my family to the Sudbury Massachusetts Independence Day parade. Sure other towns also have great parades but do they have Minutemen? You can buy a print of this image on my commercial site by clicking here.

Happy Independence Day!

This year as the United Kingdom declares independence from Europe, I thought it appropriate to republish this post from a few years ago.

I am so fascinated with American’s insatiable appetite for Britain and the royal family and apparent disdain for French culture. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Without the help of the French we would have never defeated the British and won our independence. So this year when you fire up the BBQ have a nice red wine with your burger and say vive la France!

Candidate #19—Independence Day

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. This image was taken at the Independence Day parade in Sudbury MA in 2008. Please feel free to leave comments if you agree or disagree about including them in a “best of” list.

Don’t Wanna Discuss it!

I said earlier this week that a Photographer had to give themselves permission to observe people. My wife said this shot was intruding and, yes it is but it honestly captures a moment of human expression. As a photojournalist your image should capture a decisive moment, a human expression or a moment of action. That is the way Henri Cartier Bresson teaches and who can argue with that?
This one is not for sale but you can see other images and buy prints and apparel at my commercial gallery.
