A Dolphin Story

So my son in law told me once, “Dolphins Are Jerks”. It took me a while before I heard the story behind this passionate statement. Apparently as a young man he went to a place in Florida where you could ride a dolphin. He was the last ride of the day and apparently the animal had enough and jumped on top of him, holding him down and nearly drown him. So, yah Dolphins ARE jerks or at least “event” operators in Florida are.

In any case, they are beautiful in the wild and we are fortunate to see a few on whale watch outside Auckland New Zealand

Selective Color Project–Framed

While enjoying cocktails at Churchill’s in Auckland I noticed this young lady posing for a friend at sunset. The wind was blowing through the room and a waitress closed the door part way perfectly framing the pose.

The New Zealand Maritime Museum

We had the misfortune to get caught up in a “rain river” event that closed the Auckland Airport and stranded us in Auckland for three days. Of course if you have to be “stuck” Auckland is not a bad place for that to happen. We were fortunate to find an inexpensive hotel in the Wynyard Quarter and as the rain continued we had an opportunity to visit the Maritime Museum.

It is difficult to capture the size of the space in photographs. It is truly a must see if you are in Auckland.

Manderley Sheep Farm

During our recent visit to New Zealand we had the opportunity to visit a working sheep farm. The Maderley Family Farm is located in Little River near Christchurch New Zealand . It was one of the best tours I have ever experienced.I always wanted to see dogs herd sheep ever since owning Deuce our Border Collie. Ross and Mary Millar run this farm and welcome you into their life.

Except for shearing season they run this farm and about 3500 sheep by themselves with the help of their wonderful dogs. The tour included a complete demonstration of bringing the sheep off of the mountain and then putting them back up there. Using only two dogs, a herder to bring them down and a barker to send them back up. They then demonstrated the shearing process and afterwards invited us in to their home for tea and fantastic sausage rolls and biscuits.

If you have an opportunity to take this tour, do it! You will be happy you did.

Death from Above

I love photographing birds traveling through Florida and the tropics. They are beautiful, elegant and colorful. They also, like most animals need to kill to survive. Here is a beautiful Blue Herron lunching on a lizard at the gardens on Sarasota Florida.

The Chicago Botanic Garden

We recently visited the Chicago Botanic Garden. A fantastic outing and too big for one day. You could spend most of the day looking at the model railroads alone. The trail to see the entire garden is over two miles and it does not include all the side excursions you can take. Next time we visit we will make sure to get to the Japanese Garden.

All Thanks To Oregano

For years our lilies and day-lilies provided only treats to the deer herd from Frick Park. We were almost ready to just dig them up when our new neighbors built a fence. The deer couldn’t get back there any longer to feast on the lilies and they grew tall and bloomed. However the day lilies were still victims. The deer could feast on them from our driveway.

My wife heard that deer hated oregano so we planted it next to the day lilies and voila our day lilies are finally able to bloom. In addition we have a LOT of oregano.

Happy Independence Day America

Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. Except for the fireworks. I used to love fireworks as a kid. However now I realize how upsetting they are to veterans and also to pets I have revised my opinion. However time for a great barbecue with friends and usually great weather helps us appreciate our freedoms and hopefully we can hold on to these in troubling time.
