A Moment in Time

My wife has always said that life happens in the small spaces. Some of our best memories are not the wedding celebrations or parties but rather a moment of being, a moment of zen. I remember a moment when I took a picture of my wife on a beach in Sarasota 45 years ago as if it was yesterday even though the picture and negatives are long gone. I look for those moments when I take photographs.

This discussion in front of a cafe in Köln Germany caught my eye. I can’t help but wonder if this is a moment they will remember 45 years from now or if it was an insignificant meeting.

Cowboy’s Best Friend

Years ago we attended a nature walk through the desert near Scottsdale Arizona. Our guide pointed to one of these cactus and called it the cowboys best friend. The needles could be used as emergency sutures or to sew up torn jeans or boots. It is a variety of Cholla cactus and they are plentiful in the Sonora Desert of the southwestern United States and Mexico.

Viking Hiln

Last October we toured Europe for four weeks and I have been posting a selection of images from the trip for months. For eight days our floating hotel was the Viking Hiln. OK all the Viking ships have weird Nordic names. I am sorry I didn’t capture more pictures on the ship. It was truly a luxury vessel with beautiful facilities. The service and meals were 5 star and the service by the crew was even better.

Our sail was along the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel Switzerland. Day long excursions to castles and towns were rewarded with nighttime shipboard entertainment. Here are a few shots I captured, I guess I will have to take another cruise to really photograph the ship.

St. Stephen’s Revisited

Last year I posted about St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) which is the founding church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna. It is a huge Gothic Cathedral in the Stephansplatz and construction began in 1339.

I love the interior shot of the Cathedral in that post but found these images which show the interior and exterior of the Cathedral. It is difficult to get a shot of the whole Cathedral. In addition to the immense size it is squeezed in between other narrow streets at buildings. You would need a crane, drone or helicopter to capture it.

California Science Center

The first time I ever went to a science center was in the 1970’s in Toronto. It was fun and enlightening and we have made a habit of going to Science Centers as we travel around the world. We have been to centers in New Jersey,San Francisco, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Milan and others.

This year we went to The California Science Center in Los Angeles for the first time. It is a beautifully designed facility and the special exhibit was the Magic of Pixar. It was a fun peak behind the science of animation. They also limited the amount of people in the special exhibit through reservations so it was never too crowded and it made the exhibit more accessible

National Geographic at Kinderjik

Last time we visited Holland we took a tour of the UNESCO site at Kinderjik. The Windmills of Kinderdijk are along the Rhine River in Holland south of Amsterdam. They are used to manage water and eliminate flooding and have been in existence since the 15th Century.

Our guide told us that this yellow wooden frame was to mark the spot where a National Geographic Cover was photographed. I don’t think that the yellow frame was placed by the Magazine but rather the tourist authority that manages the site.

Köln Waterfront Church

Köln (Cologne) is the largest city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Köln survived the largest bombardment of any city in Europe by the Royal Air Force In World War Two. It was nearly destroyed in the process but has been thoughtfully reconstructed. This waterfront church is a example of the reconstructed city.

Yesterday I posted Santa Monica and extolled on the virtues of this wonderful beach town. Although as Dr Phil says, no mater how flat you make a pancake it has two side.

The first time I saw the beach at Santa Monica was in 1967. The pier looks pretty much the same today and the beach is still a spectacular stretch of white sand. Of course the neighborhood is even more upscale and wealthy then it was in the 1960’s. They were just building the Interstate 10 and back then Santa Monica couldn’t compete with Westwood and Beverly Hills. Of course it is beachfront and as Los Angeles grew so did the price tag in Santa Monica.

It is a public beach so you see all kinds of people there from hippies and families to bodybuilders and of course tourists. There is a wonderful bike and pedestrian path that runs all the way from the Pier to Venice and Muscle Beach. It is a great walk for people watching and exercise.
