Two Church Village

The Rhine River cruise was too interesting to be boring. However, after a while the villages became predictable. There was a dock, a town hall, a small square and a Church. This town must have been special because there were two churches along the river.

Rhine River Village

One of the joys of cruising on a river is sitting on the veranda watching life pass by at an enjoyable pace. Sometimes the boat travels slow and you can see a beautiful vantage point on the land from the lazy river. This taken on the Rhine River near Koblentz Germany while cruising on the Viking Longboat Hiln. .

Along the Rhine River–Bornhofen

The Rhine Gorge is a stretch along the Rhine River that is a UNESCO Site. Every few miles there is something to see from the deck of a river boat. The river is lined with with ports, castles churches, orchards and vineyards. This is Bornhofen and its beautiful church along the river.

Viking Hiln

Last October we toured Europe for four weeks and I have been posting a selection of images from the trip for months. For eight days our floating hotel was the Viking Hiln. OK all the Viking ships have weird Nordic names. I am sorry I didn’t capture more pictures on the ship. It was truly a luxury vessel with beautiful facilities. The service and meals were 5 star and the service by the crew was even better.

Our sail was along the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel Switzerland. Day long excursions to castles and towns were rewarded with nighttime shipboard entertainment. Here are a few shots I captured, I guess I will have to take another cruise to really photograph the ship.

Cruising the Rhine Gorge

Skiing the Rhine River

Part of our excursion was on a river boat cruise ship, The Viking Hiln. Al the Viking ships have weird Nordic names. The ship, service and food were exquisite and a tip of the hat to Camelia for running the best bar on the river and Sharon our great program director. Part of the joy of the ship was enjoying views from our veranda as we cruised the river.

It was a cold day but it didn’t stop this brave guy from challenging the river. This was taken from our veranda between Heidelberg and Basel.

Paddle Wheel

I have always been fascinated by paddlewheel boats. Maybe because I grew up in Pittsburgh or maybe because I met my soulmate on the Gateway Party Liner. In any case I find them fascinating to watch. These photos are of the Mini-Ha-Ha on Lake George New York.

The Mini-Ha-Ha

The only paddle-wheeler on Lake George is the Mini-Ha-Ha. It is also the loudest. It’s steam horn is enough to make you jump and when it is docked it plays loud and mostly awful calliope music. It is much prettier when it is out of port in the middle of the lake and the dock area much quieter.
