Pittsburgh In Monochrome

Since I am traveling virtually this year I am revisiting places I have been and editing some of my images in monochrome. I look for images where the color does not add any value to the image and then see if I can convert it effectively. Of course Pittsburgh is my home but right now I miss traveling to my favorite places. I miss the museums, The National Aviary and the Phipps. I miss being able to do street photography. Yet looking through some of my images I found a few that were worthy of converting to monochrome.

My Virtual Vacation Day 1—Pittsburgh

We had hoped in retirement to travel the world. So far we have done a pretty good job with trips to Mexico, Hawaii, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and The Czech Republic. However the pandemic has stopped all of that for a while. So while waving for Africa, Alaska and Scandinavia our current travel is going to have to be virtual. Like all of our recent trips they begin and end in our home town of Pittsburgh.

Cathedral of Learning 4/28/2020

It’s strange to be able to stand in the middle of the street and take this shot. No cars, one person walking at high noon. This is our second outing in 7 weeks and still Pittsburghers seem to be following the guidelines for social distancing. This is probably the reason there has not been a big surge in cases here. I hope we have the stamina to keep it up.

Cathedral of Learning

The Cathedral in Autumn

We live in Regent Square so we see this building regularly. It is easy to take it for granted. The Cathedral of Learning, is a Pittsburgh landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A gray day with a splash of color adds to the Cathedral’s magic.

It is 42 stories high and was construction was finished in 1934 although classes were first held their in 1931. It is the second tallest gothic style building in the world that is not a church. A proud symbol of the University of Pittsburgh and the city it represents.

Cathedral of Learning from Phipps Conservatory

The Phipps Conservatory has a sophisticated power system using solar, passive solar, hydroelectric and wind to power their state of the art Conservatory. This view is from the roof area adjacent to the solar farm and shows their new wind turbine. In the back is the beautiful Gothic Cathedral of Learning of the University of Pittsburgh.
