Saint Goar Germany

Along the Rhine River in Germany there is a stretch of the middle Rhine known as The Rhine River Gorge. It is a popular name for the Middle Rhine Valley, a 65 km section of the River Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen in Germany. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in June 2002 for along this stretch the river is lined with over thirty castles, the most notable being Marksburg Castle which has never even been partially destroyed.

The stretch also has lovely little villages and towns like Saint Goar. This view was taken from a Viking river cruise ship.

Child of Prague

We had been touring for a month and the last thing I wanted to see was another European Church. It was our last day in Europe and we had spent about five hours at Prague Castle. I was tired. However my bride of 45 years insisted we had to see The Child of Prague. I had no idea what it even was but have learned Happy Wife, Happy Life so I grudgingly agreed. It is truly one of the most interesting religious artifacts I have ever seen.

The Infant Jesus of Prague or Child of Prague is a 16th-century Roman Catholic wax-coated wooden statue of child Jesus holding a globus cruciger. It is on display at a very small Church of Our Lady Victorious in Malá Strana in Prague. It is very beautiful and difficult to photograph due to all the reflections.

Rhine Church Three Ways

I cannot decide which version of this image I like the most. Once again the digital dark room makes it in some ways harder to make decisions. In a real darkroom, I probably would ave not wasted the chemical, paper and time to make multiple prints but the digital darkroom makes it easy to create multiple versions and hard to choose just one. Which do you like better?

Horses Near Il Duomo

I took this picture in 2011 outside the Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente in Milan Italy. We had just left the Cathedral and this installation was in front of a museum in the square. It was about two million degrees and we hadn’t eaten at all and never did see the musuem. I never did find out anything about these sculptures and not sure if it was a temporary or permanent display.

I never did publish the image. It was taken at noon and I tried to do some masking and editing but could never get the detail I wanted. I decided to use some of the NIK collection tools on the image and finally got it to the point where I can share it. It was a stark contrast to the medieval architecture of Il Duomo.

Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian general and political figure and seen as one of the founding fathers of modern Italy. Garibaldi was a central figure in the Italian Risorgimento. He personally commanded and fought in many military campaigns that led eventually to the formation of a unified Italy. He was appointed general by the provisional government of Milan in 1848. The statue is opposite the Cathedral in the Plaza Il Duomo in Milan, Italy

At Prayer

I don’t talk much about religion or politics on this blog. So all I can say with the state of our political landscape we will all need some of this in the months ahead. This was taken at a neighborhood church in Milan Italy.

Inside The Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente

The Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan and is commonly known as Il Duomo. However, Il Duomo is used also in reference to other Cathedrals in Italy, the most famous being the one in Florence. Although you are not allowed to take Photographs inside, I managed to take a couple of shots before being discouraged. It is certainly a magnificent Cathedral and the largest in Europe outside of the Vatican. It took six centuries to build, just imagine that kind of commitment. Begin the Beguine

I first learned about Beguines when I began to travel to Belgium in the early the late 1980’s. My only previous reference point was my father singing Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine” when I was a kid. The Beguines were a religious order of the Catholic Church that focused on healing the sick and wounded. In 1776, the City of Bruges dedicated a new “Beguine House” and Chapel near the town center. It is beautiful, quiet and pristine place to visit while touring the city. Many Americans are drawn to the entry gate since the dedication date is also the date of our nation’s birth. It makes you realize how old Europe. You can buy a print of this image on my commercial gallery by clicking here.
