Before Photoshop #2—Made in Pittsburgh 1977

I had done a number of darkroom composite pieces in monochrome but this was the first one I did in color. Color photographic paper was expensive in the 1970’s but this was a fairly easy blend since the skies in both images were similar in tone. I was able to complete it with only wasting one piece of paper. The airplane was taken at the old Pittsburgh Airport, The buildings are on Worth Street In Palm Beach Florida.

Bandit and Shadow

Before returning home to Pittsburgh we lived in a mountain community in the Pocono Mountains. Our current dog is not well socialized yet and doesn’t do well at dog parks. But Shadow knew how to play and he would play with Bandit until they both fell over exhausted. I miss the show these two would put on and never once hurt each other.

Regent Square Daylily #1–Yellow Ledbetter

We planted a lot of day lilies under the misconception that deer would not eat them. They destroyed the ones in our front garden but relentless application of repellent has saved the beauties in our back garden. The dark purple ones will be next to bloom. I think I will call this one Yellow Ledbetter. Thank you Pearl Jam.

Today’s Walk Through Regent Square

We have a young active dog and each day Lady Trey requires about four miles of walks to keep her calm and well balanced. We live in Regent Square which is one of Pittsburgh’s best neighborhoods for walking. It borders Frick Park so you can walk through neighborhood streets or paths through the woods.

On today’s walk we came across a beautiful variety of daylily that I have never seen before. The colors are quite striking and I thought worthy of sharing.

Columbine from Our Regent Square Garden

One of my favorite spring flowers are columbine. There are over 70 species of columbines and innumerable hybrid species. They come in a variety of colors. They also seem to be deer and rabbit resistance allowing them to achieve a full bloom.

Pink Daffodil

Every year my wife plants additional daffodils. Living near Frick Park we like them because deer won’t eat them. In fact we discovered you can protect your tulips by surrounding them with daffodils. Deer and rabbits will stir clear.

She surprised me this year with these late blooming daffodils that have a pink fringe around the trumpet. I had never seen them before.

Bleeding Heart in Our Regent Square Garden

After my fourth year of photographing this plant I finally got an image I like. The trick is a bright overcast day without any hard shadows to ruin the delicate nature of the bloom.
