The National Aviary Pittsburgh PA

The National Aviary is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated exclusively to birds. Located in West Park on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, the National Aviary’s diverse collection comprises more than 500 birds representing more than 150 species from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild. Although the Aviary has been in Pittsburgh for a long time on October 27, 1993, by declaration of the U.S. Congress, the Pittsburgh Aviary was designated honorary national status and renamed the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. It is truly a one of a kind experience that can only be found in Pittsburgh.

Cathedral of Learning from Phipps Conservatory

The Phipps Conservatory has a sophisticated power system using solar, passive solar, hydroelectric and wind to power their state of the art Conservatory. This view is from the roof area adjacent to the solar farm and shows their new wind turbine. In the back is the beautiful Gothic Cathedral of Learning of the University of Pittsburgh.

In Pittsburgh we have one of the best conservatories in the world. The Phipps Conservatory has fourteen different green house rooms connected with walkways. Waterfalls, glass sculptures and benches are scattered throughout and volunteers and employees are there to answer your questions while they maintain the beauty of the environment.

The Spring Flower Show is an excellent time to visit and you still have until the middle of May to catch it in full bloom. Here are a few images form our latest visit.

Have A Great Thanksgiving

This year is the first time in a long time we will be home on Thanksgiving. Normally we venture to Boston and spend Thanksgiving with family but because of our heavy travel schedule, this year we will celebrate at home. I love our neighborhood this time of year. Neighbors are involved in high end home decorating in Regent Square and some have a great sense of humor. This one is on my street. Thanks neighbor!

Pittsburgh from Schenley Oval

Last week I shared an image of Pittsburgh and received some nice comments. So here is another one shot from the top of Schenley oval in the park adjacent to to Oakland. This one was shot with a telephoto lens and I find it more striking.

Pittsburgh Fall 2016

I thought I would miss out on seeing Autumn colors in Pittsburgh this year since we would be away for most of October. However, due to the warm weather and absence of frost the trees still have not turned. They seem to be adapting well to global warming. This was taken on November 4th and still no frost.

Pittsburgh Giraffe

These long legged animals are amazing and unique. No other animal comes close to being this tall or having such a log neck. You might confuse a panther with a cougar, a wolf with a coyote but Giraffes are unique among all the mammals. This one was taken in the habitat at the Highland Park Zoo in Pittsburgh PA.

Safe at Second

Last week we went to two really good baseball games. I haven’t been to so many games since I was a kid and we have been enjoying our time in PNC Park. Last week Gregory Polanco was called out at second on a pick off play. It was the first game this year that I took my camera to a game. When Clint Hurdle challenged the play, I knew and so did anyone else sitting next to me in Section 4 that he was safe.

Rembrandt Tulip

This is a special tulip, it almost looks like a painting hence the name. When we moved into our new house in Pittsburgh last year we vowed to add 100’s of bulbs each year to make each spring special. This was the first year with a feast of spring blooms and next year promises to be even better.
