Pittsburgh’s Art All Night

This year was the 20th Anniversary of Pittsburgh’s unique art festival; Art All Night. It started in 1998 with 101 pieces of art and 200 all night art lovers. It now draws hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors. The show is not juried and free to enter and attend.

The festival runs for 24 hours beginning on Saturday and ending on Sunday afternoon in an empty warehouse in the Lawrencville neighborhood of Pittsburgh. There are two stages in that provide continuous music. Vendors sell food and beer. Volunteers tell stories to children and provide free face painting.

Saturday night is raucous with lots of beer and food being served. Sunday is relaxed and laid back and the music is less rock and more folk. This was our first year attending, next year we will go Saturday night and maybe shoot some video.

The Phipps Conservatory has a sophisticated power system using solar, passive solar, hydroelectric and wind to power their state of the art Conservatory. This view is from the roof area adjacent to the solar farm and shows their new wind turbine. In the back is the beautiful Gothic Cathedral of Learning of the University of Pittsburgh.

Have A Great Thanksgiving

This year is the first time in a long time we will be home on Thanksgiving. Normally we venture to Boston and spend Thanksgiving with family but because of our heavy travel schedule, this year we will celebrate at home. I love our neighborhood this time of year. Neighbors are involved in high end home decorating in Regent Square and some have a great sense of humor. This one is on my street. Thanks neighbor!

Pittsburgh from Schenley Oval

Last week I shared an image of Pittsburgh and received some nice comments. So here is another one shot from the top of Schenley oval in the park adjacent to to Oakland. This one was shot with a telephoto lens and I find it more striking.

Pittsburgh Fall 2016

I thought I would miss out on seeing Autumn colors in Pittsburgh this year since we would be away for most of October. However, due to the warm weather and absence of frost the trees still have not turned. They seem to be adapting well to global warming. This was taken on November 4th and still no frost.

Civility and Politics

I don’t usually comment or post about politics on this blog. In the last six years of writing this blog my political posts have only been a plea for people to get out and vote. Once again I encourage people do so. I will not be in the United States for most of the time leading up to the election. THANK GOD! Elections have always been contentious but this year has set a new low. We can blame it on the candidates but it is not really their fault.

Society is more polarized and angry that it has been since the Vietnam war and our political landscape is merely a reflection of how fractious and divided the United States has become. I have always felt guilty for the way we disrespected those who returned from the war in Vietnam but now the pendulum has swung the other way and if you don’t worship the flag and display your love of country many think you are not American. I yearn for simpler times when politicians were less controlled by lobbyists and Americans were less judgmental of each other’s actions but I recognize those times have passed. We are encouraged by social media to have an opinion about everything and correct and judge each other.

I realize like Roland Deschain that the world has moved on and I struggle to move with it. Once again i encourage you to vote and not to be discouraged. I know many people don’t even register to vote for silly reasons like they don’t want to serve on a jury or their religion prevents them from voting. So a nation that preaches democracy to the rest of the world and feels it has the right to take democracy to all has one of the lowest voter turnouts of any nation. This is shameful.
