Sculpture Garden

Isla Mujeres off the coast of Cancún Mexico has a wonderful sculpture garden near South Point. We stumbled on it after driving our little golf kart over the entire island.

The sculptures are located on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea and there is a gift shop and cantina overlooking the sea.

Stolen Art

OK, so technically this is not really stolen art. The Art Institute of Chicago allows you to take pictures in most areas as long as you do not use flash photography. I rarely will take pictures inside a museum but do enjoy photographing sculpture so when I saw the Chagall Windows I almost felt compelled to take pictures of them. We had seen more of Chagall’s windows in Nice but these are pieces he created specifically for the United States audience.

Millennium Park–Tenth Anniversary

The Chicago Park District is the oldest and largest park district in the U.S. It has the distinction of spending the most per capita on its parks, even more than Boston in terms of park expenses. The Chicago Park District oversees more than 580 parks with over 8,100 acres of parkland as well as 24 beaches, 77 pools, 11 museums, two world-class conservatories, 16 historic lagoons and 10 bird and wildlife gardens that are found within the city limits.

Lincoln Park was Chicago’s first large park and Millennium Park is the newest large park. Millennium Park contains a Frank Geary designed band shelter and auditorium and the world famous Cloudgate (The Bean) and the famous Crown Fountain. In addition to many permanent sculptures they bring in temporary installations. These giant heads are on display until December 2015. They were created by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa who also created the Crown Fountain and are there to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of Millennium Park.

Second City Heads

I know New Yorkers don’t want to believe this but Chicago is called “The Second City” since it rebuilt itself after the Great Chicago Fire. Chicago has many nicknames, The Windy City and The City That Works among them. Theodore Dreiser called it “This Florence of the West”. I love the architecture and public art of Chicago. When I revisited Millennium Park after my daughter’s wedding, I found a wonderful new art installation that will be there for the next year or so. Like all the art in that area it is interesting and spectacular.

Super Soaker

I had never been to Chicago’s Millennium Park in the Summer before and I had only seen the Mosaic “talking” heads in the cold weather. I had no idea it was a fountain. We wandered over there after lunch and hours spent at the Art Institute Museum. I was watching the kids playing in the water when all of sudden this happened and the talking head turned in to a super gobber!

Makin’ Tikis

I love watching street artists. I am always amazed by a number of things. One is that they can make something so complex and not be distracted by people staring and walking around. Or distracted by noise, dogs, little kids, the wind and a host of other things. This guy was particularly amazing because one slip of that chisel and his foot is chopped liver. I didn’t have the nerve to ask him if that had ever happened. This was shot on the street in Lahaina in Maui County Hawaii.

Lago Como Italia

At the foot of lake Como lies the port city of Como. From this harbor you can take steam boats to the other towns along the lake like Portofino or Tavernola. There is also a ferry system on the lake which is much like using a metro in Milan or Paris. People buy monthly passes and commute to jpbs and schools along the lake.

Port Como

Port Como

I can’t think of a better way to spend a day than cruising on Lake Como during the warmth of summer. Many people visit Lake Como without ever going out on the lake which is like sleeping through a movie. This pristine location is home to George Clooney and many other famous people and by spending a day there you will learn why. You can buy a print of this image and see many others in my Europe Gallery by clicking here.

Cruising on lake Como

Cruising on lake Como

If you drive to Lake Como or take a Bus or Boat you might miss this great scene. This is the side of a sculpture you see as descending the stairs from the Lake Como Train Station. It is called the Monumento ai Caduti per Servicio and dedicated to disabled service people. It was created by Francesco Somaini and is actually a sculpture of two hands but from this angle it looks like the City is waving hello. Spooky Eyes

Every time I visit the Louvre, I try to see new parts of the Museum. I still haven’t seen it all in my three visits and probably never will…it’s just too big. The last time we found a new sculpture room and some work we had never see. I don’t know who the artist was but I swear the eyes of this statue follow you as you go through the gallery. I walked by it a couple of times and it made me feel kind of creepy like this guy was watching me.

Leonardo’s Horse

Horses are a popular theme in the modern cultural history of Milan. Maybe it’s because of the story of Leonardo’s horse. Leonardo’s horse is a sculpture that was commissioned of Leonardo da Vinci in 1482 by Duke of Milan but never completed. The late Charles C. Dent of Allentown, Pa. – a retired commercial airline pilot dedicated the final 17 years of his life to bring The Horse to life. While Charles C. Dent passed away in 1994 his organization continued and completed the statue in 1999. The statue stands as a symbol of goodwill between the American people and the people of Italy. I don’t know the background of this sculpture which is adjacent to Il Duomo but can’t help but think that in some way it is related to Leonardo”s Horse. Chicago’s Millenium Park

Millennium Park is located in the Chicago Loop and best known for it’s world famous structure called Cloud Gate (The Bean). However scattered through the park are other sculptures. The one designed by Frank Geary is not only art but functions as an acoustic band shell for the outdoor amphitheater and concert venue. You can bu a print of this one and see others at my Commercial Gallery.
