Merry Christmas and Happy New Years

As we prepare to go visit family I wanted to take a moment to thank my on-line family for your support during the year. I expanded my reach to over 80 countries and had the best year for visitors with over 9,000 visitors and close to 20,000 views.

Next year we will take ourselves and our lenses to four different countries and revisit some of our favorite domestic locations so please stay tuned.

I wish you all a happy end to 2018 and even a better year in 2019 and a joyous holiday season.

A Perfect Jewish Christmas

In 2012 we spent Christmas at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City. The resort was new and only lasted for a few years. It was a great place though while it lasted and this is a repeat of my post from 2012. Oh, and we didn’t win.

It can be tough being a Jew around Christmas time unless you have a Christmas Family. I was fortunate growing up and we always had a family that we hung out with at Christmas. We would get a couple of gifts, and give some, share in the meal and have a some time around a brightly lit Christmas tree. However, it is well known that if you don’t have a Christmas family then you can do two things on Christmas if you are Jewish.

1) Attend the massive Jewish meeting to discuss how we will control the media for yet another year.
2) Go to a movie and eat Chinese food.

It used to be when I was a kid everything was closed on Christmas, even gas stations. Not any more. We decided this year to up the ante and instill a new tradition by going gambling and eating in a signature restaurant so we are off to Atlantic City to revel in the new Revel Resort. So I won’t be posting for a while and if I win BIG, maybe a long while. Whatever you do, have a great Christmas. That’s right I am Jewish but can still wish everybody a Merry Christmas.

The fall foliage was really poor this year around Pittsburgh. It was too long too late and the fall colors were sporadic. So I had to return to the vault to find a good image of the Autumn. This was takn a few years ago in Pike County Pennsylvania.

Halloween in Regent Square Part2

Regent Square is a great family neighborhood in Pittsburgh where we make our home. Its great year round. Spring brings beautiful gardens and magnificent trees. Summer means block parties and The Run Around The Square. But fall brings Halloween and I have never lived in a community that embraces this holiday so fully.

I am continuing to scout the neighborhood thinking I might have to do a video to really capture the scene. Here are a couple of more from this week.

The Joy of Golf

The legend is that Mark Twain once wrote that golf was “… a good walk ruined.” History tells us that he may not have said this at all but it has always been my opinion on golf. It seems a major investment in time and money for something that is essentially free. Golf seems to also cause a lot of anxiety and as a former country club bartender I could tell you some stories.

That said, a lot of people love the sport and for them I took this picture of a sculpture that seems to capture the joy. This is at a resort in Palm Desert California.

A Desert Oasis

The Palm Desert in southern California is home to Palm Springs and famous as a golf resort and winter oasis. It is also the home to Indian Canyons. It is not a national park since the park is on an Indian Reservation. In 1876 and 1877, the U.S. Federal Government created a deed in trust to the Agua Caliente people of 31,500 acres for their homeland. The tribe takes care of the park with assistance from California.

There are many different hikes and canyons and it is worth the short drive from Palm Springs to see the wonder of a desert oasis. We were there after a heavy rain and it was lush and green but also some of the trails were washed out.

My cousin in Los Angeles seemed confused when I told him we were planning to drive to Las Vegas for a couple of days. Oh he understood the occasional need to go to Las Vegas but couldn’t imagine why anyone in their rights mind would drive instead of fly. Especially when I told him we had done the drive before. He has lived in Los Angeles for all of his life and can’t say Desert without putting the word stinking in front of it. He looked at me with confusion when I asked him what to see in The Mojave Desert.

For me, every terrain offers unique challenges and opportunities. Every time I am in the Desert I find the photographic challenges to be unique and also rewarding. It is too bright, too stark and kind of boring. However those very features provide unique opportunities. The drive is hot and tiring but worth it as long as you never stop in Prim Nevada.

Ghost Ship

Memphis Tennessee

Memphis is situated along the banks of the Mississippi River just across the border of Arkansas and only miles from Mississippi. It is a city of about 650,000 and ranks sixth in The United States asa center for African Americans. About 65% of the people in Memphis are African American and it shapes the culture and history of the city.

Of course Memphis is known for an unfortunate event in our history; the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. I believe every citizen needs to visit Memphis to experience the emotion of the National Civil Rights Museum. It also important in the history of the Blues. See it performed on Beal Street or explore the history at Stax Records or Sun Studio. Also enjoy some amazing food and barbecue. A great place to visit and explore some original American culture.
