La Grande Arche de Ugly

Paris is a city of superb architectural structures both ancient and modern. When the Eiffel Tower was first constructed it was supposed to temporary and at first Parisians hated it, but learned to love it as one of the symbols of their great city. However, personally I don’t think I could ever learn to love La Grande Arche de la Défense. In my opinion, it is a monstrosity. I appreciate its functionality as an office structure but just don’t think it fits in a city of such magnificent architecture. You can see more images from my european collection by clicking here.

Nice Knocker!

One of the things I enjoy about traveling through Europe is how “old” it is. We have old areas in the USA too but they are all Native American and not reminiscent of the foreign cultures many of us immigrated from. The architectural details you find on old buildings in Europe are sometimes interesting and unusual like this door knocker from a house in Amsterdam. Place de Armes Montréal

Montreal is unmistakably a French City in the Canadian Province of Québec. You may forget that because most people speak English and the city is very cosmopolitan. If you speak English they will speak English and if you speak French they may have some trouble understanding you since their dialect is different than the French that is taught in USA schools. Although we are closer to Québec, we teach French in the way it is spoken in France. This is something I have never completely comprehended. This is the beautiful Place de Armes as taken from the steps of Notre Dame Cathedral (yes there is also a Notre Dame in Montréal). Parish Church in Montmartre

Many people may hustle right by this beautiful old church on their way to see the The Basilique Sacré-Coeur. This beautiful historic building is near the Abbesses Metro Stop in Montmartre. It is a very accessible church unlike some of the Cathedrals in Paris. There is no list of rules, just come on in, take pictures, pray, sit in solitude in an ancient building without hordes of tourists take pictures on their phones.
