Every summer we have special visitors as the hummingbirds fly up from the south to visit. They seem to love red flowers the best so we plant flowers specifically to attract them. Welcome Back!
I think most people as children want to be able to fly. We dream about it and some actually jump out of airplanes and off cliffs with the appropriate equipment just to be able to simulate the experience of flight. As a photographer capturing birds in flight has been a goal for decades and I have captured a few. However many times the sky is boring behind the bird so this time I just replaced the sky with one I like better.

In Flight
Storks have a full life. I mean just think about delivering all those babies! This is Lettuce Lake Park in Tampa and this is where they go to hang out during their down time. I try not to disturb them and let them have their r and r.

Storks on Holiday
There is a major reason I like West Florida better than East Florida. On the east coast everyone gets up early to see the sunrise over the beach. I don’t like getting up too early. On the West coast everyone heads for the beach to see the Sunset. A perfect time of day to see nature’s beauty and most days there are beautiful sunsets at Clearwater Beach. The only thing better would be to on one of those sailboats.

Sunset Sail
The White Heron is a migratory bird but we rarely see them in Pennsylvania. However, we have see them all over the place in Florida. This one was captured in the Florida Botantical Garden in Largo Florida.

White Heron
I was telling my wife that over the years of visiting Florida, I had never seen a White Pelican. My mother who had lived in West Palm Beach had thought they were going extinct. Turns out they are migratory and real snowbirds!
We visited the Ding Darling nature preserve on Captiva Island and saw hundreds of these large birds. They are much larger than brown pelicans or even bald eagles for that matter with a nine foot wing span. I was fortunate to capture one in flight.

Although not in the most pristine condition, this old sail boat still has a certain attractive style. Kind of like me, I think.

Das Boat
It took a while to get a picture of this bird. You would think it would be easy. This is a large stork but good at putting his head in the swamp looking for food and hiding behind trees. This was taken at Lettuce a Lake in Tampa.

It is around this time of year that I get desperate for Spring and begin to look for signs of Spring returning to the mountains. Last week I saw and heard a Pileated Woodpecker. They don’t leave for long and are usually the first birds back to the area. Soon the winter birds will start to leave and fly north. Then the Robins will return. All these birds can fool you however, they can all handle a little cold and snow. You know its really spring when you see the hummingbirds and I can’t wait for their return.
