Pittsburgh Day Lily 2018

Each year I try to publish images of the best blooms form our garden in Regent Square. Somehow, this one fell through the cracks. So even though the bloom is long gone, we can still enjoy its vibrant color.

Summer at The Phipps

Its still not to late to see the Summer Garden at The Phipps Conservatory. In addition to all your summer favorites, there are some less flashy yet interesting plants to see.

I especially like plants that look like other things. This bromeliad looks like a star. And the plant below that almost looks like lace. The Phipps is one of Pittsburgh’s cultural treasures and deserves at least a couple of visits each year.

Waterfall at The Phipps

If you follow this blog you know that we visit The Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh frequently. Normally we visit in the fall and winter months so I had never noticed the waterfall before. It is on the outside deck and I am sure it is only operational in the late spring and summer months.

Water Heads at The Phipps

The current Summer garden at the Phipps has a number of places with they have used sculptures of human heads in the exhibit. Last week I published Garden Faces that show some botany sculptures.
These sculptures are part of an integrated exhibit utilizing buttons, musical tones and water jets. It is very creative and lots of fun.

Day Flying Moth at The Phipps

Day flying moths or butterflies come in a variety of colors and designs. This one was photographed in the butterfly garden at the Phipps. The color is unusual and I thought worthy of capture.

The humidity and warmth of this room is greatly appreciated in the winter but almost overwhelming on a warm summer day. Go slow and take some water with you. It is worth it.

Visit Cuba at The Phipps

If you are a regular at The Phipps Conservatory you are familiar that for the last few years The Tropical Room has been dedicated to The Congo. Newly redone, the room now focuses on Cuba.

There are features on Cuban food. medicine and of course plants native to the island nation. I was also appreciative of another focus of the island. It has a fascination with old American cars represented by this beauty.

Zebra Butterfly at The Phipps

Day flying moths or butterflies come in a variety of colors and designs. This one reminds me of a zebra and was photographed in the butterfly garden at the Phipps.

The humidity and warmth of this room is greatly appreciated in the winter but almost overwhelming on a warm summer day. Go slow and take some water with you. It is worth it.

Garden Faces at The Phipps

I love having a membership at the Phipps because we can visited each season and see an entirely different garden. Each season brings changes and a new reason to visit.

This summer the Congo has turned in to Cuba and well there are also new faces in the garden.

Smithsonian Candidate #7…Strasbourg France

I am thinking of entering the Smithsonian Photo Contest even though I have zero chance of winning. I say that not to denigrate my ability as a photographer, but each category already has over 50,000 entries. Sure a lot of them are crap but some, well follow the link above and see for yourself. Also you can only submit work from 1/1/2016 until the present and all works with people must have a model release.

If you are familiar with any of my work (e.g. Moment and Souls) you probably realize I don’t have a lot of model releases.

Fortunately I do have some images that may qualify in other categories and will be publishing some here to see if you feel they quality. Please comment and let me know your thoughts. This one is in the Travel Category and is a view Strasbourg France from Bassin de la Citadelle.

Our Pittsburgh Garden– White Iris

White flowers are the hardest to photograph. Iris especially are difficult because they reflect so much light but are thin enough to also refract a fair amount of light and light therefore transmits through the leaves.

To compensate for this, you must use a tripod so that you can use a low ISO setting and achieve enough depth of field to capture the transmitted light as well as the reflected light. During editing in post production it will be necessary to reduce the highlights by at least one and a half f-stops to be able to see the texture of the bloom in the white area.
