Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria

Neuschwanstein Castle is located in Bavaria on the mountain behind Schwangau Village. It is the castle that is frequently called “Cinderella’s castle” because Disney used it as a model for their movie fantasy. The reality is not like Cinderella at all. It was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria who is known as Mad Ludwig. He lived in the castle only a short time before he was dethroned and sent to a sanatarium where he died mysteriously in a struggle with his therapist.

Hohenschwangau Castle Redux

The fortress Schwangau is mentioned in historical records dating from the 12th Century. It stood high up on a rock on the site of the present 19th-century Neuschwanstein castle. Hohenschwangau castle was first mentioned in 1397 and stands on a hill below Neuschwanstein. This photograph of Hohenschwangau was taken from the balcony in the front of Neuschwanstein. The original was taken in the summer of 2011. I recently edited the image using tools from the Nik Collection and found the edited version to be outstanding. You can compare the two below. Let me know which one you like better.

Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation

Tucked behind the Cathedral of Notre Dame is a little visited memorial, Most people stumble upon it looking for a walk down to the river. The Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation is a memorial to the 200,000 people who were deported from Vichy France to the Nazi concentration camps during World War II.

It was designed by French architect and town planner Georges-Henri Pingusson and dedicated by Charles de Gaulle on April 12, 1962. The memorial is shaped like a ship’s prow and the “crypt” is accessible by two staircases. Inside is the tomb of an unknown deportee who was killed at the camp in Neustadt. Along both walls of the narrow chamber are 200,000 glass crystals with light shining through, meant to symbolize each of the deportees who died in the concentration camps. Worthy of a visit next time in Paris.

The Money Shot

I have published a few images of Neuschwanstein Castle on this blog and my commercial site. Unfortunately none of them are from the perfect angle. The best place to take a picture of this famous castle is from the middle of a wooden bridge. That is the money shot. Unfortunately when our tour got to the bridge it began to rain. This image was taken in the rain and so the sky is blah rather than blue and depth of field not as great as I would have liked. An hour earlier the sky looked like this but you can’t control the weather or in this case the tour guide..

Schloss Hohenschwangau

Most people travel to this part of Bavaria to see the famous castle Neuschwanstein. We did the same and spent all of our time there. This is a lesser palace known as Schloss Hohenschwangau. Next time we will skip the
Neuschwanstein tour and spend some time inside this beautiful building and then tour the exterior of Mad Ludwig’s Castle.. It is interesting to know that neither Neuschwanstein or Schloss Hohenschwangau are considered castles but rather 19th Century Palaces although they commonly called “schlos” which is the German word for Castle.

The Hunter’s Lodge

Jäger is the German word for “hunter”although many might think it is was invented just for the movie “Pacific Rim”. This Jägerhaus or Hunter’s Lodge is a restaurant and pub at the foot of the mountain in Schwangau Bavaria on the road leading to Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Hohenschwangau. Neuschwanstein, also known as Mad Ludwig’s castle was used as a model for Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

Bavaria–The Alps

I live on a mountain. I have also traveled a lot through different mountain ranges in Colorado,California,Utah,New Mexico,Maine,Canada,Pennsylvania,North Carolina etc. It is amazing how different mountains can look and yet so similar at the same time. A mountain in Pennyslvania and one in Tennessee can look very much alike but you wouldn’t confuse them with the Rockies.

These are the Alps in Germany near the Austrian border. I don’t think these look like any other mountains I have seen but can’t say what it is that makes them look so different. I have never been to the Canadian but this doesn’t look like Colorado to me.

Kristallnacht

Americans have some dates burned in their memory. September 11 and December 7 are two notorious dates where Americans were attacked, killed and suffered extreme hardships. It is important as Americans to remember these dates and honor the fallen. However, as citizens of the world we MUST remember today as well because it is the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht. Tonight were the first attacks on Jewish homes in Germany. At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and a further 30,000 arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps. Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked, over 1,000 synagogues were burned and Jewish businesses destroyed or damaged. Millions of others experienced death and torture by the lunatic Hitler. We must never forget and always honor this day. Things are much better in Europe now for Jewish people that have remained or returned over all these years. However, recently when visiting Italy I saw it was still necessary for soldiers to guard the synagogue in Milan and heavy fences kept out even curious tourists like myself.

L’ Europe Roulante Videograph

The famous film director Robert Altman was once asked why all of his movies had at least one murder. He said, and I paraphrase, “…you don’t have to too much of a plot if you have at least one murder scene.” So here it is once again, my 8 minute epic videograph of Europe and make sure you wait for the murder scene! You can see more of my Videogaphs by clicking here.
