Bombay Beach

California is a wonderful state. It has endless beaches, mountains, deserts, national parks, spectacular waterfalls and tall magnificent trees. It is also a state of extreme weirdness. If Hollywood and Venice Beach aren’t weird enough try the Winchester House or one of the many roadside attractions. This year we took an exploration into the weirdness with the first stop being the Salton Sea.

The Salton Sea is about 15 miles by 35 miles with an estimated surface area of 343 square miles making it the largest “lake” in California. It also has a higher salinity than the Pacific or Atlantic Oceans and is similar to the Great Salt Lake. The “sea” also expands and contracts. It is much larger than it was in the 1920″s but has begun a cycle of contraction again a few years ago. It is not a great tourist spot. Sometimes dead fish litter the shores. There are a number of State maintained beaches and it has become somewhat of a Mecca for people wanting to live off the grid.

There was a documentary film made in 2014 about Bombay Beach discussing the residents of the ghost world along the Salton Sea. The people living along Bombay beach and the other beaches are not completely off the grid. There is the possibility of electricity and fresh water. As we traveled further down the road towards Slab City and East Jesus, the Salton Sea seemed less desolate on our return trip.

Dreamboat

I grew up in Cleveland Ohio for the first part of my childhood. We used to vacation on lakes and I would go fishing with my dad. We would see Chris Craft boats on the lake and I would ask my Dad why would couldn’t have one of those. He would laugh and say well may someday you will. I still have never ridden in one of these beauties and plan to change that soon but I will never be able to afford one without winning the lottery.

We saw this one while waiting for a steamer in Lake Como. It was privately owned and not available for hire. Who knows maybe it was George Clooney’s

Smiling Lake George

There are a number of boats that offer parasailing on Lake George. My favorite was the Smile Boat. Not because the parasail design is that great but because it represents the opposite of how I would feel if I were parasailing. Even when I was younger this is not something I would have considered doing. I liked water skiing and still like to snorkel. I learned how to like roller coasters and thrill rides but parasailing has never been on my list.

Sunrise at Elm Beach

Earlier this week I posted “Dock on Elm Beach” which received some nice attention. This is another image from the same session taken during a morning sunrise which I hope you enjoy.

Dock on Elm Beach

I think September and October are two of the best months for living in the Pocono Mountains. The weather is near perfect, the summer crazies have gone home and it’s too early for most hunters and skiers. The pace settles down, the air is crisp and mild and the colors are beautiful. This is a small lake about two miles from my house in Hemlock Farms. You can purchase a print of this and see other images and apparel at my commercial site.

Sturgeon Bay

I have lived most of my life in the Northeastern United States and yes Pittsburgh is part of the Northeast not the Midwest or Atlantic States. We did live in Texas for a while and I lived in Los Angeles for a year in 1967-1968 but other than that I am an eastern guy. If you live where we do and you want to escape to a rugged northern sea coast you go to Maine. But where do you go if you live in Chicago? There is no rugged seacoast right? Wrong, you go to Wisconsin.

Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin is in Door Couny two hours or so north of Milwaukee. If I dropped you there from a helicopter you would swear you were in Maine. There are some clues, there are not lobster signs everywhere and no smell of salt in the air but the people still talk funny and it is as rustic as you could want.

Texting on the Emerald Sea

Maybe they were calling for help because they were scared of the algae filled water? Maybe they were texting each other? Maybe the male was looking up instructions on how to row a boat? Whatever the reason they didn’t seem to be paying attention to each other which is what a romantic row boat ride in New York’s Central Park is all about. The Lake at Central Park

The Lake at Central Park on the West Side of Manhattan is the second largest body of water in the park after the reservoir. You can rent row boats if you are so driven or rent bikes to ride around the park. If you live in the city nothing is more fun on a summer Sunday than being in the park, if you live in the mountains where I live, it’s no big whoop. Swim Pals

Shadow and Tilly are best of friends. They play until they drop on the land and in the water. Tilly is eyeing the ball but Shadow has learned to swim very well with a ball in his mouth. He knows if he should drop it the chase is on. See other scenes from my nature portfolio by clicking here.
