Another one from the unused image vault. I did put a full size image of this on my commercial site for sale but never shared it with my blog audience. In my opinion this was the precise moment of sunrise. When shooting a sunrise or sunset I always shoot a series so I get the perfect moment. Easy to do with free pixels rather than expensive film. This was taken last December on a beach near Cancún Mexico.
As a photographer I have risen frequently to greet the morning sun. I am always struck by the birds. If you are going to take a sunrise picture you want to be on the scene before the sun rises. If you are real early in the eerie light you can hear the birds waking up but can’t see them. Then you will begin to see them perched and stretching their necks, fluttering their wings and then as the sun begins to peek out flight.
There is a short period of time after the sun rises when the sky still has brilliant color but the sun is already to bright to photograph. The challenge is to find an object to partially block the rising sun to allow you to continue shooting.
This thatched beach hut in Cancun Mexico provided a perfect sunblock and a beautiful sky.
Okay, so when I get up at 5:15 a.m. and run outside to take pictures of the sun rise without any coffee, I am not necessarily thinking too clearly. As I set up to wait for the sunrise I looked behind me and saw Vladimir Putin jogging up the boardwalk. I turned back to the sunrise. What!! I turned back and the guy was still far away. I didn’t notice any secret service or KGB and realized it was not Putin but just a jogger.

The entire pace of Milan Italy changes on Sunday morning, everything moves at a slower pace…well almost everything. Italy is a Catholic country and the one thing you will not be late for is Sunday Morning Mass. Churches are also almost the only buildings without graffiti. This young family has a purposeful stride which makes me think they are headed for Church and not a morning coffee like me. You cn buy a print of this image on my commercial site by clicking here.
In Italy you see more bicycles and motorcycles than cars. I am sure one of the reasons for this is the high cost of gasoline. Whatever the reason, the people walking and riding in Milan seem more fit that most people you see in American cities. It is hard to tell in this image who is having more fun, the pedaling father or dozing child. You can buy a print of this image on my commercial site by clicking here.
