Grateful Dead Revisited

The third in a series revisiting my first posts leading up to my Blogaversery next week.
Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden in September 1993. This photo was taken the last time I saw the Grateful Dead and near the end of their historic run in rock and roll. I still enjoy listening to old Grateful Dead concerts occasionally but have no desire to ever see any of the cover bands. I saw the real thing and I don’t want to spoil that memory. Chick Corea at the Beacon

I first began listening to Return to Forever in the early 1970’s. The current edition has reunited Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke,Lenny White and Jean-Luc Ponty and added a new guitarist Frank Gambale. Zappa and Jean Luc

Jean Luc Ponty is a musical genius and has played with both Return to Forever and Frank Zappa. So when Return to Forever and Zappa Plays Zappa were at the Beacon Theater it was natural that Jean Luc came on stage to play a tune before playing the entire set with Stanley Clarke and Chick Corea. Ace-Bob Weir

Early on in the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir was known as Ace. His first solo was also entitled Ace. It was also the name of my first dog as an adult, but we didn’t name him after Bob. A great writer and guitarist in his own right, he was a key element of the Grateful Dead’s sound. Here he is the last time I saw him with the Grateful Dead in Madison Square Garden in 1993. Phil Lesh

Phil Lesh is arguably one of the best pick bassists of all time. He is very musical and like all the other great bass guitar players uses the whole fret board and exchanges leads with the other players. What keeps off the all time best list in my opinion is that he always plays with a pick and never plays finger style or slap bass. Here he is with the Grateful Dead in a concert at Madison Square Garden in 1993.
